Daniel’s childhood memory had once seemed simple. Catherine had left Harbor Ridge in Richard Vale’s car, with Edwin beside her.

Now even that memory had split open.

George placed the enlarged Harbor Ridge photograph on the table.

Daniel pointed toward Thomas.

“When I saw the car that night, the boy in the passenger seat was turned away. Same height as Edwin. Same hair. Same coat.”

Edwin shook his head.

“What coat?”

Daniel described it.

A dark wool coat with a torn seam at the shoulder.

Edwin went still.

He had owned one.

So had Thomas.

Margaret had exchanged their clothes deliberately after Thomas’s first failed escape attempt. Boys were harder to follow if witnesses remembered the wrong jacket.

Daniel had never known that.

Clara closed her eyes briefly.

“So the boy with Catherine could have been Thomas.”

“Could have,” George said. “Or somebody wanted Daniel to think it was Edwin.”

Sloan checked the old timeline.

The supposed date of Catherine Mercer’s death was two days after the night Daniel remembered seeing her leave Harbor Ridge.

That meant the paperwork had not been created in advance.

Someone had waited.

Two days to see whether she would stay gone.

Two days to decide whether she needed to die on paper.

Edwin asked Daniel why he had never told him.

Daniel’s answer came without defensiveness.

“Because by the time I understood that it mattered, you were already dead.”

Edwin flinched.

Daniel continued.

“On paper, anyway.”

The cruelty of the sentence came from its truth.

George redirected them before the old bitterness took over.

“Thomas wants Edwin at the river tonight. If Thomas was the boy who left with Catherine, there’s a reason.”

Clara suggested Thomas might remember Edwin being involved in his escape.

Edwin rejected that immediately.

“I wasn’t.”

“Maybe you don’t remember.”

“I would remember helping someone leave Harbor Ridge.”

Daniel looked at him carefully.

“Would you?”

Edwin turned.

Daniel did not sound accusatory this time.

He sounded uncertain.

That was worse.

Sloan asked Edwin whether he had any unexplained gaps in his memory from that period.

Edwin said no.

Then stopped.

There was one.

A stretch of approximately three days after Elias Reed’s records were discovered missing.

Edwin remembered waking in the infirmary.

He had been told he suffered a fever.

He remembered none of the illness itself.

Clara searched surviving Harbor Ridge medical records.

Edwin’s infirmary stay existed.

Diagnosis: viral fever.

Treatment: rest, fluids.

But the nurse’s initials beside each entry belonged to a woman who had not yet begun employment at Harbor Ridge on those dates.

The record had been created later.

George looked at Edwin.

“You weren’t sick.”

“Apparently not.”

Daniel whispered, “They drugged you.”

Nobody could prove it.

But Harbor Ridge medication logs showed sedatives removed from storage during the same week.

Not enough to raise concern.

Enough to keep a child unconscious.

The possibility transformed Edwin’s certainty.

Perhaps he had not helped Catherine and Thomas escape.

Perhaps someone had made sure he could never know whether he had.

Sloan’s team continued searching Catherine’s false death.

The physician who signed the certificate had also authenticated Peter Holt’s identification after death.

That doctor, Leonard Shaw, had worked occasionally for Vale-controlled businesses.

His surviving records were stored in a county archive.

A search produced an unusual billing entry dated the morning after Catherine supposedly left Harbor Ridge.

Private examination.

Female.

Age withheld.

Paid by R. Vale.

George asked whether the examination location survived.

An address did.

Not a hospital.

A farm property.

Clara recognized the surname of its owner.

Price.

Evelyn Price’s family.

Margaret’s family.

So Catherine had likely been taken from Harbor Ridge to property connected to Thomas’s supposed mother.

Thomas may have gone with her.

Edwin may have been incapacitated while it happened.

And Richard Vale arranged a medical examination the next day.

George studied Anna’s birth records.

“What if Catherine wasn’t escaping?”

No one answered.

“What if she was hiding a pregnancy?”

Clara looked at him.

Anna’s age had already proven older than official records claimed.

If Catherine had become pregnant with Anna years earlier than the documents suggested, Harbor Ridge might have been used to hide the child from the Mercer family.

But Anna appeared in a photograph there already around age ten.

That meant Catherine’s connection stretched across years.

Marian was contacted again.

She remembered Catherine.

Not by name.

As “the Mercer girl.”

An older teenage girl who occasionally came to Harbor Ridge with Richard Vale.

Elias did not trust her.

Not because she was cruel.

Because he believed she was frightened enough to obey anybody.

Marian also remembered a rumor.

Catherine had once tried to leave with one of the boys.

Which boy, Marian never knew.

Daniel covered his mouth.

“That’s what I saw.”

George asked when the rumor spread.

Marian placed it within days of Catherine’s supposed death.

The pieces aligned.

Catherine left Harbor Ridge at night.

A boy was in the car.

The boy may have been Thomas.

Richard Vale remained involved.

Two days later Catherine died on paper.

Thomas’s paternity record was altered to name Richard.

Thomas then disappeared into a new identity structure.

The question became obvious.

Why?

Sloan’s analyst found another document.

A property transfer from the Price family farm.

Three weeks after Catherine’s paper death, Richard Vale acquired a hidden ownership interest through a shell company.

Payment was far above the land’s value.

It looked less like a purchase than a payoff.

George asked who inherited the money.

Evelyn Price.

Margaret.

Edwin leaned back.

“So she was paid after Catherine vanished.”

Daniel said, “For Thomas?”

No one knew.

Clara returned to the birth registration naming Evelyn Price as Thomas’s mother.

The form was altered.

But perhaps only one field had been changed.

Perhaps Evelyn truly was Thomas’s mother.

Maybe Richard’s name was the false part.

George looked at Daniel.

Then Edwin.

If Thomas was a Mercer, one of the Mercer men had to be his father.

Their father was the obvious possibility.

But the timeline opened another.

An older Mercer son whose records had barely appeared.

Clara found him in family correspondence.

Jonathan Mercer.

Half brother to Daniel, Edwin, and Catherine.

Much older.

Sent away after a family scandal.

He vanished from official Mercer references before Harbor Ridge.

Daniel remembered the name.

Barely.

“Our father said Jonathan disgraced the family.”

“How?” George asked.

“He never said.”

Edwin remembered more.

Their mother once warned Catherine never to speak to Jonathan if he returned.

That suggested something larger than ordinary family estrangement.

Sloan searched Jonathan Mercer.

No reliable death record.

No confirmed marriage.

No military record.

But one alias on Elias Reed’s first page included initials J.M.

Not identified as a child.

Listed as sponsor.

Beside Thomas’s original entry.

The room fell quiet.

Thomas was connected not merely to the Mercer family.

Jonathan Mercer had personally sponsored his Harbor Ridge placement.

George said, “If Jonathan was Thomas’s father, why would Richard let everyone believe Thomas was his?”

Clara answered.

“Because Jonathan was worse.”

Edwin looked toward her.

“Worse than Vale?”

“Or more dangerous to the family.”

A message arrived on George’s phone.

Thomas.

One photograph.

It showed Richard Vale seated in a chair.

Alive.

Bruised.

A newspaper lay across his knees, proving the image was current.

The text beneath it read:

ASK EDWIN WHAT JONATHAN DID TO CATHERINE.

Edwin stared at the words.

“I don’t know.”

Another message came.

HE DOES.

Edwin’s face drained.

George asked quietly, “What aren’t you remembering?”

Edwin pressed his palms against the table.

Fragments began surfacing.

A locked office.

Catherine crying.

A man’s raised voice.

Not Richard.

Not their father.

Someone else.

Tall.

Thin.

Wearing a ring with a black square stone.

George’s eyes dropped to his own father’s signet ring in the photograph.

Edwin shook his head before anyone could speak.

“No. Not him.”

“What man?”

“I don’t know.”

“Think.”

“I am.”

Then one detail returned.

The man had called Catherine “Kit.”

Daniel reacted.

Jonathan used that nickname.

Their father hated it.

Only Jonathan called her Kit.

Edwin stood abruptly.

The missing days around Catherine’s escape were no longer empty.

Something existed at their edge.

A memory he had spent decades believing was a fever dream.

Catherine holding Edwin’s face between both hands.

Telling him:

If they ask, you never saw Thomas.

George asked, “Who are ‘they’?”

Edwin whispered, “Jonathan.”

Then another fragment surfaced.

Thomas in the back seat of a car.

Catherine driving.

Edwin standing beside the road.

Not inside.

Not escaping with them.

Helping them leave.

Daniel had seen the car after Edwin stepped away.

From a distance, through darkness, he saw Thomas in Edwin’s coat and thought his brother was inside.

Edwin finally remembered.

He had helped Catherine and Thomas escape.

And someone had drugged him afterward so he could not clearly tell Elias what happened.

Thomas’s demand suddenly made sense.

Bring Edwin.

Thomas remembered too.

Before midnight, Sloan prepared the river operation.

But George’s phone received one last message.

Not from Thomas.

From an unknown number.

Three words.

DON’T TRUST THOMAS.

Attached was a photograph taken only minutes earlier.

Thomas stood outside River Building 6.

Beside him was an elderly woman.

Gray-haired.

Thin.

Alive.

Daniel recognized her immediately.

Even after all those years.

Catherine Mercer.

Click here to continue reading: PART 26: Catherine Mercer’s Survival Reopened the Night Thomas Escaped Harbor
