The physical fact of her remained strange. Every few minutes I looked sideways just to confirm she was still there.

Anna rode in front.

Jonas had been taken to a hospital after complaining of chest pain during the night. Before leaving, he had insisted the safe-deposit key remain with Elizabeth.

Martin was still missing.

Mercer had been questioned and released.

That last fact sat badly with in an older part of town, all marble columns and brass doors.

Jonas’s key opened Box 412.

Elizabeth and I were permitted into the viewing room after paperwork confirmed that Jonas had added her as an authorized user months earlier under her legal identity.

That surprised me.

“You’ve been Elizabeth this whole time?”

“Legally, earlier.

Weeks before Dad died.

My hands became cold.

“He recorded this while Dad was dying.”

“Apparently.”

We started with LINDEN.

The bank had no cassette player, but Clara had brought the recorder from Martin’s storage unit.

Jonas’s younger voice came first.

Then Mercer.

Then Dad.

The recording was imperfect, apparently made from inside a coat or bag, but the words were clear enough.

Mercer discussed the Linden property.

Dad warned that the alarm inspection had been scheduled.

Mercer said it had been delayed.

Jonas asked how long.

“Long enough.”

Dad asked whether tenants were still inside.

Mercer replied that moving them before the purchase would make the owners suspicious.

Then Dad said, “If something happens before repairs, that is on us.”

Mercer answered, “Nothing is going to happen.”

The tape continued.

Two days later, nine people died.

Elizabeth sat perfectly still.

“You heard this conversation?”

“Part of it.”

“But this recording proves Dad knew.”

“Yes.”

“He could anymore.

But we had not come for comfort.

I inserted the tape labeled PRICE.

The recording occurred after Samuel Price’s death.

Mercer was furious.

Jonas sounded frightened.

“You told me to scare him.”

Mercer replied, “And now he isn’t talking.”

“That wasn’t the way about Dad.

Not absolution.

Not simplicity.

We inserted the final cassette.

For several seconds there was only breathing.

Then Martin spoke.

“State your name.”

Dad answered.

“Richard Ross.”

My heart lurched at hearing him.

His voice was weak.

Cancer had already reduced it to a rasp.

Martin asked, “Are you making this statement voluntarily?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Dad gave a faint laugh.

“Because apparently dying makes everyone interested in honesty.”

I closed my eyes.

That was him.

Martin asked about Linden Street.

Dad admitted knowing the inspection had been delayed.

He admitted taking money from Mercer after the property was acquired.

He admitted helping conceal financial records.

Then Martin asked about Elizabeth.

The tape went silent for several seconds.

Dad finally said, “I failed her before she fell, while she was falling, and every day afterward.”

Elizabeth covered her mouth.

Martin asked whether Dad pushed her.

“No.”

“Did That was true physically and false morally.”

My throat tightened.

“Why did you tell people she died?”

Martin asked.

Dad breathed for a long time.

“Daniel said it solved the immediate problem.”

Elizabeth shut her eyes.

Dad explained that her condition was unstable after surgery. Mercer warned that if Elizabeth spoke, both the financial crimes and Linden could surface. Dad agreed to move her to a private facility while deciding what to do.

Martin asked who created the death story.

“I did.”

No hesitation.

“Why?”

“Because I wanted control.”

The honesty was worse than an excuse.

“I wanted Elizabeth unable to leave with George. I wanted Daniel unable to reach her without coming through me. I wanted Anna frightened enough to stay quiet. I wanted every problem contained.”

Martin asked, “Did you believe Elizabeth would remain at the clinic?”

“For a while.”

“And after Clara removed her?”

“I looked for her.”

“Why?”

Dad’s voice broke.

“To bring her back.”

“Against her will?”

A long silence.

“If necessary.”

I stopped the tape.

My hands shook.

Elizabeth touched my wrist.

“You don’t have to—”

“Yes.”

I pressed play.

Martin asked about the year Dad found Elizabeth.

Dad admitted it.

“I went alone.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel wanted her dead by then.”

Elizabeth stared at the recorder.

Martin’s voice sharpened.

“Did you tell her that?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because she already knew.”

Dad described offering Elizabeth money.

He had arranged payments through Clara’s account because direct transfers could expose her location.

“Why continue them?”

“Because she was George’s mother.”

I stared at the machine.

Martin asked whether Dad ever considered telling me she was alive.

“Every day.”

“Why didn’t you?”

Another silence.

“Because then I would have to explain why she wasn’t with him.”

That sentence hurt more than anything before it.

Dad had not maintained the lie solely to protect me.

He maintained it because truth would expose him.

Martin asked about Anna.

Dad admitted fabricating the theft evidence.

“Did Anna steal from you?”

“No.”

“Did you threaten George?”

Dad breathed painfully.

“I threatened the possibility of an accident.
