that night.

Or the next morning.

He waited three days.

Then he called.

“I opened it.”

I sat at the piano bench.

“And?”

His voice was thick.

“It wasn’t about Cynthia.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course it wasn’t.

“What was family, we have failed her.

I pressed my fingers against the piano keys without making sound.

Mom had written it before Cynthia married Dad.

Before the hidden accounts.

Before the babysitting fight.

Before everything.

She had not predicted our future.

She had named a fear almost every parent could understand.

Dad said, “I failed you.”

I looked out my window at the maple tree.

“Sometimes.”

He inhaled sharply.

I continued.

“But not completely.”

Silence.

“I’m still here.”

“Yes.”

“And you’re learning.”

“Yes.”

“So am I.”

Dad cried quietly.

I let him.

Then he asked whether I wanted to read the rest.

I thought about it.

“Not today.”

“Okay.”

Maybe someday.

The letter would wait.

Paper was good at that.

<a
