Ask before trusting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Mom\u2019s entire statement is about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need you to actually understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice was steady.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cI benefited from money that may have belonged to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t make it disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll repay whatever accounting says I received.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had not expected that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know the amount.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoesn\u2019t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt might.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I\u2019ll figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For once, he did not ask whether repayment would repair us.<\/p>\n<p>He simply accepted the obligation.<\/p>\n<p>That mattered more.<\/p>\n<p>Later that day, Evelyn called again.<\/p>\n<p>Another document from the cabin had been identified.<\/p>\n<p>A handwritten rental ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Cynthia\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>It tracked income from Mom\u2019s property.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom of several yearly pages, Cynthia had written notes to herself.<\/p>\n<p>Most were ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>Roof.<\/p>\n<p>Tenant deposit.<\/p>\n<p>Tax due.<\/p>\n<p>Insurance.<\/p>\n<p>But one appeared repeatedly.<\/p>\n<p>M balance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does M mean?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think Maya.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The earliest note:<\/p>\n<p>M balance protected until 18.<\/p>\n<p>Later:<\/p>\n<p>M not ready.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>M still home.<\/p>\n<p>Then, after my eighteenth birthday:<\/p>\n<p>Delay distribution.<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Cynthia had not merely forgotten to tell me.<\/p>\n<p>She had made a decision.<\/p>\n<p>Again and again.<\/p>\n<p>Delay.<\/p>\n<p>Wait.<\/p>\n<p>Keep me home.<\/p>\n<p>The final entry had been written four months earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Just after my twenty-first birthday.<\/p>\n<p>M can access now.
