Marianne.

She answered.

When Evelyn asked about the check, Marianne became silent.

Then she said, “I wondered when you’d find that.”

Dad leaned toward the speaker.

“Why did you give Laura twenty-five thousand dollars?”

Marianne did not answer immediately.

When she finally spoke, her voice sounded tired.

“Because it wasn’t my money.”

My chest tightened.

“Whose was it?”

Marianne inhaled.

“Cynthia’s.”

No one moved.

Dad whispered, “What?”

Marianne continued.

“Or rather, money Cynthia had taken.”

The room went still.

“Taken from Marianne.

Marianne had recovered part of it.

But instead of returning it to their mother directly, something else had happened.

“Why did Laura get it?” I asked.

Marianne’s voice cracked.

“Because Laura helped me find where Cynthia had hidden it.”

I stared at the cashier’s check.

Mom and Marianne had not merely known each other.

They had worked together.

Years before Cynthia entered our family, my mother had helped expose her.

And suddenly Cynthia’s interest in
