Dad followed in his car. Brandon took Mason home, though he promised to keep his phone nearby in case Evelyn needed a statement about the storage unit.

I rode with Dad.

Neither of us spoke for the first ten minutes.

His hands stayed at ten and two on the steering wheel, unnaturally precise.

Finally he said, “I bought that house before I married your mother.”

I turned toward him.

“I thought you and Mom bought it together.”

“We moved into it together.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

He glanced at me.

“No. I bought it about a year before we were married.”

“So Cynthia transferred something that was yours before either humor.

“I don’t know much of anything anymore.”

I looked out the window.

Traffic moved normally.

People stood outside coffee shops.

Someone was walking a golden retriever.

The ordinary world had become offensive.

Dad said, “The mortgage was paid off six years ago.”

I looked back at him.

“Completely?”

“Yes.”

“Then why transfer it into a company?”

“That’s what I’m trying to understand.”

“Did you ever talk about putting it in an LLC?”

“No.”

“For taxes?”

“No.”

“Estate planning?”

“No.”

“Protection from lawsuits?”

“No.”

I stopped.

“Then there’s no innocent version.”

Dad tightened his grip on the wheel.

“There might be.”

“You really believe that?”

“I’m trying not to decide before Evelyn looks at everything.”

That sounded like her influence.

A week earlier, Dad would have reacted first and investigated later.

Now he had learned the discipline I was still struggling to practice.

Evidence.

Not suspicion.

But the difference felt thin when a house was under contract.

At Evelyn’s office, her assistant had already printed county records, company filings, deed history, and the public notice attached to the sale.

Evelyn entered the conference room carrying a second ownership dispute.”

“Paused the closing?”

“Not formally.”

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?”

“It means they do not want to insure a sale if ownership is contested.”

“That sounds good.”

“It is helpful.”

“But not enough.”

“No.”

Dad asked, “Can Cynthia still force it through?”

“She can try.”

Evelyn sat.

“I’m preparing a request for emergency injunctive relief.”

I understood none of that except emergency.

“Will it stop the sale?”

“If granted.”

There was that word again.

If.

Dad looked at the paperwork.

“What do you need from me?”

“Everything.”

He frowned.

“Meaning?”

“Your original purchase documents, mortgage satisfaction, tax records, any estate-planning papers, signatures from the relevant period, bank records, old driver’s-license applications if you have them.”

“Why driver’s-license applications?”

“Signature comparison.”

Dad stared at her.

“You think she forged me.”

“I think we should determine whether you signed these documents.”

She opened the corporate registration.

“We have an electronic filing under your name.”

Then the deed.

“And a notarized property transfer.”

Dad’s eyes narrowed.

“Notarized?”

“Yes.”

“By whom?”

Evelyn turned the page.

The notary’s name was Patricia Leighton.

Dad stared at it.

“I know that name.”

“So do I.”

“How?”

Evelyn glanced toward me.

“Patricia worked with Cynthia.”

My skin prickled.

“At the property management company?”

“Yes.”

Dad leaned back.

“You’re kidding.”

“I wish I were.”

“How do you know?”

“Rebecca gave us the old employee list. My assistant cross-checked names.”

Dad rubbed his jaw.

“So Cynthia’s former coworker notarized a deed transferring my home into Cynthia’s company.”

“That is what the document says.”

“Is Patricia still a notary?”

“She was at the time.”

“Where is she now?”

“We’re locating her.”

I asked, “Would she have had to see Dad sign?”

“Yes.”

“Personally?”

“Generally, yes.”

Dad looked at the signature.

“I did not sign this in front of anyone named Patricia.”

Evelyn nodded.

“That matters.”

She slid another document across the table.

“Now look at this.”

It was the deed transferring my mother’s rental property.

Same notary.

Patricia Leighton.

Dad’s face went still.

“No.”

I leaned closer.

The signatures looked nearly identical.

Too identical.

Same downward stroke.

Same slight loop on the D.

Same narrow B.

Even I could see it.

Evelyn said, “These were signed six years apart.”

Dad stared at them.

“So?”

“So signatures naturally vary.”

She placed a transparent sheet over photocopies her assistant had prepared.

The lines aligned almost perfectly.

I felt cold.

“They’re copied.”

“Possibly.”

“From each other?”

“Possibly from a common source.”

Dad whispered, “She traced it.”

Evelyn did not answer.

Dad stood.

He began pacing.

“She traced my signature.”

“We do not know that yet.”

“Look at them.”

“I am looking.”

“They’re the same.”

“They are highly similar.”

“Evelyn.”

She waited.

Dad stopped.

“What do I do with that?”

“Nothing tonight.”

He laughed bitterly.

“Nothing.”

“You preserve records.”

“My house is being sold.”

“We are acting.”

“My wife may have forged my name.”

“We are investigating.”

“She may have stolen from my daughter.”

“We are documenting.”

Dad planted both hands on the table.

“How are you this calm?”

Evelyn’s expression barely changed.

“Because anger is useful only if it helps you choose the next correct action.”

The room fell quiet.

Dad sat again.

I looked at her differently after that.

Maybe this was why she had stayed in law so long.

Not because she did not feel anything.

Because she had trained herself to use emotion rather than be used by it.

Her assistant entered.

“Patricia Leighton is alive.”

Evelyn turned.

“Current address?”

“About forty minutes away.”

“Employment?”

“Retired.”

“Any public contact information?”

The assistant handed her a sheet.

Evelyn scanned it.

Dad asked, “Can we call her?”

“Not you.”

“Why not?”

“Because if she participated in misconduct, you do not warn her.”

There was that principle again.

Do not show people what you know.

Evelyn instructed her assistant to request a formal interview through appropriate channels.

Then she turned to Dad.

“I need you to answer something carefully.”

“Okay.”

“Has Cynthia ever had access to your electronic signature?”

Dad frowned.

“I don’t use one.”

“PDF signature?”

“No.”

“Scanned signature?”

He hesitated.

“What?”

“Maybe.”

My stomach tightened.

“When?”

“Years ago, for work.”

“How many years?”

“I don’t know.”

“Before the first deed?”

He looked at the dates.

“Yes.”

“Where was the file stored?”

“Family computer.”

Evelyn sat back.

“Which Cynthia could access.”

“Yes.”

“And she handled household documents.”

“Yes.”

Dad closed his eyes.

I watched the realization settle into him.

A copied signature required no dramatic late-night forgery.

No secret imitation practiced on scraps of paper.

It could have been a file.

One scan.

One image.

Used repeatedly.

Evelyn requested that Dad preserve every old computer and backup drive he still possessed.

He gave a hollow laugh.

“Cynthia cleaned out the office.”

“Then make a list of missing electronics.”

“I had an old external hard drive.”

“Where is it?”

“I don’t know.”

“When did you last see it?”

“Maybe last year.”

Evelyn wrote that down.

I asked, “Could it be in the storage unit?”

“Possible.”

“We didn’t see electronics.”

“We did not open every box.”

I remembered the rows.

Christmas.

Kitchen.

Files.

Old clothes.

How much could be hidden beneath labels nobody questioned?

Dad asked, “Can we inspect again?”

“With agreement.”

“Will Cynthia agree?”

“We’ll ask.”

That afternoon, Evelyn filed the emergency motion.

I went to class.

It felt absurd to sit beneath fluorescent lights identifying spinal cord tracts while a judge decided whether my childhood home could be sold.

But I went.

Beth met me afterward.

“You look terrible.”

“Thank you.”

“I mean medically terrible.”

“That’s much kinder.”

She handed me a sandwich.

I took it.

“Eat.”

“Are all nurses this bossy?”

“Yes.”

We sat on a bench outside campus.

I told her about the matching signatures.

She listened without interrupting.

Then she said, “You know what’s weird?”

“What?”

“You keep talking about the house like losing it would be the worst thing.”

I stared at her.

“It’s Dad’s house.”

“I know.”

“It’s where I grew up.”

“I know.”

“So?”

“So you already left it.”

I looked away.

She took a bite of her sandwich.

“I’m not saying it doesn’t matter legally.”

“It matters.”

“Obviously.”

“It’s worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.”

“I know.”

“What are you saying?”

She shrugged.

“Just that Cynthia’s power over you used to come from telling you whether you could stay there.”

I said nothing.

“And now everyone’s fighting over ownership.”

“Because ownership matters.”

“Yes.”

“But?”

“But you already learned you can walk out.”

The words irritated me because they were true.

I looked at the campus buildings.

Students moved between classes carrying backpacks and drinks.

I had thought leaving home would destroy my life.

Instead I had taken my anatomy final.

Passed, according to the preliminary grade posted that morning.

I had not even told Dad yet.

“What did you get?” Beth asked.

I looked at her.

“How did you know grades posted?”

“I have access to the same calendar you taped to my refrigerator.”

I smiled despite everything.

“Ninety-one.”

She grinned.

“There she is.”

For thirty seconds, I let myself feel it.

Not the inheritance.

Not the house.

Not Cynthia.

The exam.

I had passed.

The future I thought might collapse the night she told me to leave was still there.

My phone rang.

Dad.

I answered.

“Hey.”

“Did you hear?”

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

“The judge signed the temporary order.”

I stood.

“The sale?”

“Stopped.”

Relief hit so hard I had to sit again.

“For how long?”

“Until the hearing.”

“When?”

“Monday.”

Four days.

Not much.

Still better than three days to now.”

“For now.”

Beth squeezed my shoulder.

I asked Dad, “Did Evelyn tell Cynthia?”

“Her lawyer has the strange.

“Maya.”

“What happened?”

“Mom came to my apartment.”

I stood in the clinic break room.

“Is she there now?”

“No.”

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

“Mason?”

“Fine.”

“What did she want?”

“She wanted me to sign something.”

My body went cold.

“What?”

“She said it was a statement.”

“About what?”

“The house.”

“Did you sign it?”

“No.”

Relief.

“What did it say?”

“That Dad knew about Bennett Family Holdings.”

I gripped the counter.

“Did he?”

“Not that I know.”

“What else?”

“That he asked Mom to manage the transfer because he was worried about lawsuits.”

“That’s not true.”

“I know.”

“How do you know?”

“Because she told me something different last week.”

“What?”

Brandon inhaled.

“She said Dad transferred the house because he wanted to protect it from creditors.”

“That sounds similar.”

“No.”

His voice dropped.

“Today she said the creditor was you.”

I went still.

“What?”

“She said Dad was worried you would eventually claim part of the house through Mom’s estate.”

I almost laughed.

“That makes no sense.”

“I know.”

“Mom didn’t own Dad’s original interest.”

“I know.”

“And I never claimed anything.”

“I know.”

I heard paper rustle.

“I took pictures before giving it back.”

“Send them to Evelyn.”

“I already did.”

That surprised me.

“Good.”

“Maya.”

“What?”

“There’s something at the bottom.”

“Of the statement?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“A date.”

He sent the photograph.

I opened it.

The statement claimed Dad had discussed transferring the house to the LLC in March three years earlier.

I stared at the date.

Something about it bothered me.

Then I remembered.

Dad had been in the hospital that month.

Emergency surgery.

Appendix rupture.

Five days admitted.

Two weeks barely able to move.

I called him.

“Dad.”

“What?”

“Where were you March eighteenth three years ago?”

Silence.

Then: “Hospital.”

“Exactly.”

“How do you know the date?”

“Brandon sent a statement Cynthia wanted him to sign.”

I forwarded it.

Dad opened it while we were still on the phone.

His breathing changed.

“This says I met with her that day.”

“Yes.”

“I was under anesthesia.”

My skin prickled.

“Can we prove that?”

“Oh, yes.”

“How?”

“Hospital records.”

Then he added, “And you were there.”

I remembered.

I had sat beside his bed doing homework.

Cynthia had come and gone all day.

At one point she had brought documents.

I had assumed insurance forms.

Suddenly a memory surfaced.

Dad drifting in and out.

Cynthia holding papers.

A pen in her hand.

Her voice.

Just sign where I marked it.

My chest tightened.

“Dad.”

“What?”

“I remember her bringing paperwork.”

Silence.

“How clearly?”

“Very.”

“What kind?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did I sign?”

I closed my eyes.

The hospital room returned in fragments.

White blanket.

IV pole.

A plastic cup of ice.

Cynthia leaning over the tray table.

Dad holding a pen badly because of the IV in his hand.

“I think you did.”

He went completely silent.

I whispered, “Dad?”

When he answered, his voice had changed.

“She didn’t need to forge every signature.”

I knew exactly what he meant.

Some documents might have been copied.

Others may have been technically signed by him.

While sick.

Sedated.

Trusting her.

Evelyn called minutes later.

She had received Brandon’s photographs.

Her instructions were immediate.

Get hospital records.

Preserve the statement.

No confrontation.

Then she added one more thing.

“The date Cynthia chose may become very important.”

“Because Dad was hospitalized?”

“Yes.”

“And if he signed something there?”

“That depends on what he signed and whether he had capacity to understand it.”

I looked toward the break-room window.

Outside, afternoon sun reflected off parked cars.

Three days earlier I had thought the central question was whether Cynthia had stolen my inheritance.

Now we were uncovering something broader.

She had not merely hidden records.

She had structured stories around signatures.

Documents.

Dates.

Moments when Dad was grieving, distracted, traveling, or ill.

Moments when trust could substitute for attention.

And for the first time, we had a date that might prove exactly how she did it.

<a
