Do not tell her what records we are seeking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause people make mistakes when they don\u2019t know what you know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Dad.<\/p>\n<p>He understood.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPreserve everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe laptop?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTexts?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmails?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy notes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEspecially those.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of the blue notebook.<\/p>\n<p>The one I had left behind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about things Cynthia took?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake a list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen list what you know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn pulled a blank sheet from a pad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow I need names.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat names?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone who may know what Laura intended.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My grandmother was dead.<\/p>\n<p>My mother\u2019s older sister lived across the country and had barely spoken to Dad since Mom died.<\/p>\n<p>I had always been told they simply drifted apart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAunt Rebecca,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I looked back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom\u2019s sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s history there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad rubbed the back of his neck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRebecca and Cynthia hate each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My eyes widened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey know each other too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad closed his eyes briefly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many people knew Cynthia before you married her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a real question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCynthia and your mother grew up in the same town.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt as if someone had opened a door in a wall I had never realized was hollow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said they barely knew each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said they weren\u2019t close.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Aunt Rebecca know her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow well?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked toward Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>She did not rescue him.<\/p>\n<p>Finally he said, \u201cCynthia dated someone Rebecca knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His thumb stopped moving against his ring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCynthia worked for the company that managed one of your mother\u2019s rental properties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat rental properties?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked genuinely confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one we\u2019ve been talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom rented it before she died?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Cynthia worked for the management company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pieces did not fit.<\/p>\n<p>Then suddenly they fit too well.<\/p>\n<p>Cynthia had not accidentally learned about the property later.<\/p>\n<p>She had known it existed before Mom died.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe she had known the tenants.<\/p>\n<p>The rent.<\/p>\n<p>The records.<\/p>\n<p>The account.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly everything.<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn\u2019s expression remained controlled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew the property existed. That is not the same as proving she knew Laura intended it for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut she knew where the records were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd how rental property paperwork worked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd years later the house ends up in her name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad whispered, \u201cJesus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had never heard him sound like that.<\/p>\n<p>Not angry.<\/p>\n<p>Not frightened.<\/p>\n<p>Ashamed.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn turned to him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to call Rebecca.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe won\u2019t want to talk to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Maya should call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had not spoken to Aunt Rebecca in nearly four years.<\/p>\n<p>Birthday texts.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas cards.<\/p>\n<p>One awkward phone call after I graduated high school.<\/p>\n<p>She always asked me to visit.<\/p>\n<p>Cynthia always said travel was too expensive.<\/p>\n<p>I had believed her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you have her number?\u201d Evelyn asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall her today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting continued for another hour.<\/p>\n<p>By the time we left, Dad had a list of documents to retrieve and Evelyn had authorization to request records.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, the sky had turned gray.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stopped beside his car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have told you all of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No softening.<\/p>\n<p>No automatic forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pulled out my phone.<\/p>\n<p>Aunt Rebecca\u2019s contact was still there.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Hartley.<\/p>\n<p>My thumb hovered over the call button.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe may say things you don\u2019t want to hear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat seems to be happening a lot lately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pressed Call.<\/p>\n<p>It rang four times.<\/p>\n<p>Then a woman answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice sounded older than I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then sharply, \u201cAre you all right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you calling?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found Mom\u2019s letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca inhaled so suddenly I heard it through the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat letter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one about the account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the property,\u201d I added.<\/p>\n<p>Still nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAunt Rebecca?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When she finally spoke, her voice was low.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is your father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStanding next to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut me on speaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s face had gone tense.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca said his name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRebecca.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou found it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe deed too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes opened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know about the deed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A long silence followed.<\/p>\n<p>Then Rebecca said the sentence that turned Dad completely white.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I warned Laura not to let Cynthia anywhere near that house.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feeleverystory.online\/?p=13357\">Click here to continue reading: PART 6: Aunt Rebecca Finally Told Me Why My Mother Feared Cynthia, and Dad Realized Their Marriage Had Begun With a Lie<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The law office occupied the second floor of a converted brick house near the courthouse, the kind of building with narrow windows, uneven floors, and a brass plaque beside the &hellip;
