Several different families over the years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did the rent go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t have to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCynthia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to tilt.<\/p>\n<p>For years I had worked weekends while money from property my mother intended for me flowed somewhere else.<\/p>\n<p>For years Cynthia had told me I was fortunate she allowed me to remain in the family home.<\/p>\n<p>For years she had treated every hour of my time as something I owed.<\/p>\n<p>And all those years, another home had been producing income under her control.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly the night before my anatomy final looked different.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Cynthia had not exploded merely because I refused to babysit.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe my independence itself had become dangerous to her.<\/p>\n<p>Nursing school meant graduation.<\/p>\n<p>Graduation meant a career.<\/p>\n<p>A career meant leaving.<\/p>\n<p>Leaving meant organizing my own finances, records, insurance, and belongings.<\/p>\n<p>Sooner or later I might have started asking the questions Cynthia had spent years ensuring I never asked.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do we do now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He placed one hand on the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe stop guessing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made an appointment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lawyer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked again at the signatures.<\/p>\n<p>The dates.<\/p>\n<p>My mother\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Cynthia had always depended on one thing more than Dad\u2019s trust or Brandon\u2019s silence.<\/p>\n<p>She depended on me doubting myself.<\/p>\n<p>That advantage was gone.<\/p>\n<p>I closed the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen is the appointment?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you going?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo get the rest of my things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya, you can stay here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the hallway leading to the bedroom I had occupied since childhood.<\/p>\n<p>Because the room no longer felt like safety.<\/p>\n<p>Because I had spent too many years treating permission as belonging.<\/p>\n<p>Because somewhere in another city stood a house my mother had once intended to become part of my future.<\/p>\n<p>And because for the first time, I understood that finding out what Cynthia had taken would require more than anger.<\/p>\n<p>It would require proof.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I\u2019m not moving back until I know what belongs to me,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Dad lowered his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Then he nodded.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up my mother\u2019s photograph, my anatomy books, and the last box of belongings I cared about.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, I turned toward the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>The broken laptop remained on the counter beside the folder of documents.<\/p>\n<p>Two days earlier it had seemed like the worst thing Cynthia could have destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>Now I understood that its cracked screen had exposed something far larger.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had left me money.<\/p>\n<p>She had left me property.<\/p>\n<p>She had left warnings.<\/p>\n<p>And Cynthia had spent years making certain I knew none of it.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow, an attorney would begin tracing what happened.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since I walked out with one duffel bag, I was not wondering whether I had overreacted.<\/p>\n<p>I was wondering how much more we were about to uncover.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feeleverystory.online\/?p=13356\">Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Lawyer Read My Mother\u2019s Papers Twice, Then Asked Dad One Question That Changed What We Thought Cynthia Had Done<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The strangest part of learning that my mother might have left something behind was how quickly every old memory became suspicious.
