because watching her accomplish something without me created a strange emptiness.

Also true.

I wanted a fingerprint on the story.

A visible sign that Grandma had that.”

Then I said, “Don't give it to her yet.”

“Why?”

“Let her buy the tablet first.”

He smiled.

“Good.”

“And when she gets the case, do not make it into a lesson.”

“Agreed.”

Two weeks later, Maya called from an electronics store.

She held a box against her chest.

“I bought it!”

Her joy was enormous.

“How much money do you have left?”

“Four cruel.”

“I know.”

Then Austin handed her the package.

She opened the purple case.

Her face lit up.

“Grandma!”

There it was.

I felt the pleasure.

Not from solving the problem.

From celebrating after she solved it.

Different.

Better.

“Thank you!”

“You earned what goes inside.”

“I know.”

That mattered.

Over the next few weeks, she sent drawings.

A portrait of Biscuit.

A terrible rendering of Pepper.

One of the blue door.

Then a drawing of Ernest.

She used an old photograph.

He stood beside the grill with Austin.

She drew him smiling.

I stared at it for a long time.

Then she sent another.

Me in the courtyard.

Bare left hand.

I had not noticed at first.

The detail moved me.

Maya had begun seeing me not only as Grandpa's wife.

Not only as Dad's mother.

As the woman she knew now.

That felt like a quiet kind of future.

Meanwhile, Walter and I settled into something neither of us rushed to name.

Dinner once or twice a week.

Walks.

A concert.

Occasionally breakfast.

He slept at his house.

I slept at mine.

Neither of us seemed eager to merge furniture.

One evening he asked, “Do you want more?”

I knew what he meant.

Relationship.

Commitment.

Maybe eventually something larger.

I did not panic.

That was progress.

“I don't know.”

He smiled.

“Your favorite answer?”

“You've been speaking to Marjorie.”

“She warned me.”

“What did she say?”

“That uncertainty is now your religion.”

I laughed.

Then became serious.

“I like this.”

“So do I.”

“I don't want to move.”

“Neither do I.”

“I don't want to remarry.”

Walter nodded.

“I wasn't asking.”

“I know.”

“But you wanted to say it.”

“Yes.”

He took my hand.

“Good.”

Simple.

No negotiation.

No fear disguised as planning.

I looked at our hands.

Mine bare.

His also.

Miriam's ring, he once told me, stayed in a small box beside his bed.

That comforted me.

Not because he had not moved on.

Because perhaps nobody really moved on in a straight line.

We expanded around loss.

Made room.

One Sunday, Austin and Maya came without Chloe, who was working.

Maya immediately disappeared upstairs with the tablet.

Austin sat in the courtyard.

“You and Walter serious?”

“I don't know.”

He laughed.

“Family phrase.”

“Useful.”

“Do you love him?”

I looked at him.

That question felt more intimate coming from my son than from myself.

“I care about him.”

“That wasn't the question.”

“You've become rude.”

“Genetic.”

I considered.

“I don't know whether I want to use that word yet.”

“Why?”

“Because love has forty years attached to it in my head.”

“Dad.”

“Yes.”

Austin nodded.

“That makes sense.”

“Does it?”

“Yeah.”

Then he said, “I used to think if you loved anyone else, it would mean Dad lost.”

I looked at him.

“When?”

“When you started dating Walter.”

“You knew before you told me?”

“Chloe knew.”

“Of course.”

“I didn't like it.”

“I assumed.”

“But then I thought about the cassette.”

“What part?”

“You don't owe Dad the rest of your life.”

“He didn't say that.”

“No. I did.”

I smiled.

Austin continued.

“And honestly, Dad would probably dislike Walter for stupid reasons.”

“Such as?”

“He orders decaf.”

I laughed.

“That is true.”

“Dad believed decaf was betrayal.”

“He did.”

Austin smiled.

Then his expression softened.

“I don't think love has to compete.”

My throat tightened.

“How did you become the wise one?”

“Expensive therapy.”

“There it is.”

We sat quietly.

Then he looked toward the guest-room window.

“Maya's almost twelve.”

“Don't remind me.”

“She's changing.”

“Yes.”

“Sometimes I don't know how to parent her.”

“Good.”

“What?”

“Certainty is dangerous.”

He groaned.

“Can you occasionally say something practical?”

“Feed her.”

“Thank you.”

“Don't embarrass her in public.”

“Impossible.”

“Listen before solving.”

He looked at me.

“That one is targeted.”

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“Working on it.”

Before leaving, Maya showed me a drawing.

The four of us from the anniversary call.

Me.

Austin.

Chloe.

Maya.

Above us, a smaller figure with glasses.

Ernest.

“You made Grandpa a ghost.”

“No.”

“What is he?”

“A memory.”

I looked at her.

“What’s the difference?”

“Ghosts are scary.”

“And memories?”

“Sometimes.”

That answer stayed with me.

After they left, I pinned the drawing inside the study closet.

Not on display.

Not hidden.

A place where I would find it.

Weeks later, another issue arrived.

Iris called.

“I need to discuss your estate documents.”

I laughed.

“Of course.”

“Nothing dramatic.”

“That's what you always say.”

“You told Austin you had changed your plans.”

“I did.”

“You haven't signed the final revision.”

I frowned.

She was right.

Drafts existed.

Nothing final.

“Why not?”

“I don't know.”

“Would you like my professional guess?”

“No.”

“I'll give it anyway.”

“Of course.”

“You are afraid signing it will feel like choosing who deserves what.”

She was annoyingly accurate.

My estate was no longer simple.

Austin.

Maya.

Charity.

Possible gifts.

The Savannah house.

Ernest’s remaining things.

The diamond ring.

Decisions.

I had spent years avoiding one kind of automatic giving.

Now I risked avoiding thoughtful giving altogether.

“When can we meet?”

“Next week.”

“Come here.”

“To Savannah?”

“Yes.”

“Walter?”

I stared at the phone.

“What about him?”

“You need to decide whether he appears anywhere.”

My pulse changed.

“That seems premature.”

“Then decide that.”

Again.

Choice.

Not obligation.

The following week, Iris arrived with folders.

We sat at my smaller dining table.

No family history embedded in it.

Good.

She asked questions.

I answered.

The Savannah townhouse would eventually be sold unless Maya or Austin wished to purchase it from the estate at market value.

No automatic property inheritance.

My financial assets would be divided among Austin, a trust for Maya and several charities.

Austin's portion would not mirror Ernest’s restrictions completely.

Iris raised an eyebrow.

“Why?”

“Because he isn't the same man Ernest planned for.”

That mattered.

Not unconditional trust.

Not permanent
