We still need the transaction records and governing authority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hated how carefully the law moved when betrayal felt so obvious.<\/p>\n<p>But Rachel\u2019s caution had saved me more than once from turning suspicion into fact.<\/p>\n<p>Victor sent the documents through his attorney the next morning.<\/p>\n<p>The letter was exactly as he described.<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa had written:<\/p>\n<p>Frank\u2019s proposed acquisition is too speculative and improperly blends Mercer capital with his personal ambition. That Grandpa believed in him, but Frank still had to turn opportunity into something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt sick.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had turned theft, if that was what the evidence ultimately proved, into a lesson about discipline.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>She listened, asked two questions, and hung up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have the incorporation file for FB Continuity Holdings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company was formed by Michael Hargrove\u2019s office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEight days ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe day after I left Grant,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Hargrove know where the money came from?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho signed the authorization?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny board?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrust approval?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot in the formation file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel sat slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Dad created a private company after Emily started asking questions and moved trust money into it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what the records presently indicate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel covered his face with both hands.<\/p>\n<p>When he looked up, something had changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you need from me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel watched him carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you offering?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything I have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmails. Login records. Internal reports. Dad gave me access to most company systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou understand what that may mean for you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you have your own lawyer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet one before you hand over anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re telling me not to help your client?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m telling you not to make decisions you don\u2019t understand just because you\u2019re angry at your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The irony was not lost on any of us.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll get counsel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was not ready.<\/p>\n<p>The words made something ache, but forgiveness did not follow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what part?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s too big.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew about the trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew Dad was hiding things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you treated me like I was reckless for asking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if you were right, then I had spent five years helping him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the first answer from Daniel that sounded complete.<\/p>\n<p>He had not protected Dad only because he believed him.<\/p>\n<p>He had protected Dad because the alternative required seeing himself differently.<\/p>\n<p>I understood that too well.<\/p>\n<p>Grant had spent months denying the scale of his choices for exactly the same reason.<\/p>\n<p>That afternoon Daniel retained an attorney.<\/p>\n<p>By evening, he provided preserved copies of emails through proper channels.<\/p>\n<p>One message immediately mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had sent it to Daniel the morning after I left Grant.<\/p>\n<p>Move Emily reserve exposure before counsel becomes involved.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had replied:<\/p>\n<p>She doesn\u2019t have counsel.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s answer:<\/p>\n<p>She will.<\/p>\n<p>I read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had known me well enough to predict exactly what I would do.<\/p>\n<p>But not well enough to believe I deserved the truth before I had to fight for it.<\/p>\n<p>A second email followed two hours later.<\/p>\n<p>Use Continuity.
