Every time I tried to repay him, he changed the terms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrant, you signed those agreements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lied to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou used our house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My anger sharpened. \u201cThen stop asking me to see you as the victim.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut neither are you seeing what he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant\u2019s voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe made sure I could never leave his system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel was writing on her pad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe kept funding losses he knew I couldn\u2019t repay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I would do things for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer landed heavily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat things?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoving money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetween companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t ask at first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd later?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learned not to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it legal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that why you moved the six-forty?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stole it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI moved money I thought he was going to use to bury me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInto a company with Celeste.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe helped me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then you slept with her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>I shut my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she help you before the affair?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she encourage you to move the money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A long pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s pen stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou moved six hundred and forty thousand dollars and don\u2019t know where it is?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCeleste controlled the destination account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stood.<\/p>\n<p>I understood her urgency before she spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrant,\u201d I said, \u201cwhen did you last talk to Celeste?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel mouthed, Keep him talking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrant, what happened to the money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His next words came out ragged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCeleste told me she moved it somewhere Frank couldn\u2019t reach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe never told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would you trust her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought we were leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeaving where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything. Your father. The debt.
