nobody else controlled the timing.<\/p>\n<p>That evening, Harold called again.<\/p>\n<p>Not about land.<\/p>\n<p>About Leon.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn had recovered another audio file.<\/p>\n<p>Personal.<\/p>\n<p>Not client business.<\/p>\n<p>A message Leon recorded for Harold but apparently never sent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want to hear it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leon\u2019s voice came through the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarold, if I don\u2019t get out of this hospital, do not let Mara turn the cabin into a shrine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Toby, listening beside me, covered his face.<\/p>\n<p>Leon continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019ll keep every rotten board because I hammered it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Toby laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019ll tell Toby the place is his father\u2019s legacy. It isn\u2019t. He is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Leon\u2019s voice weakened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLand is land. Money is money.
