But before that, he came to Mom\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Toby stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere you there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Grant?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant had told Ortiz he did not know Voss prepared the wills.<\/p>\n<p>Another lie.<\/p>\n<p>Not enormous.<\/p>\n<p>But deliberate.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz called him immediately.<\/p>\n<p>He did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>She tried again.<\/p>\n<p>Voicemail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere was he supposed to go?\u201d Toby asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis hotel while he\u2019s in town.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell left to check.<\/p>\n<p>Paige put her face in her hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy whole family is lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat beside her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot necessarily about everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow am I supposed to know which part?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>Toby did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stop assuming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou verify.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice was tired, not cruel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what we should\u2019ve done years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paige nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Harold began examining the rest of the estate documents.<\/p>\n<p>Then his phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>An email.<\/p>\n<p>He opened it.<\/p>\n<p>His eyebrows rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn Shaw had found an archived message from Voss\u2019s old work account.<\/p>\n<p>Dated October 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Sent to a personal email address.<\/p>\n<p>Subject: H property.<\/p>\n<p>The attachment was missing.<\/p>\n<p>But the body contained one sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Structure confirmed. Spouse has lifetime protections. Son is eventual beneficiary. Will discuss alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>My skin went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho received it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold scrolled.<\/p>\n<p>The email address did not contain a recognizable name.<\/p>\n<p>Grant looked over his shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Then Paige whispered, \u201cI know that address.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAunt Vivian\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The leak.<\/p>\n<p>Not suspicion.<\/p>\n<p>Not inference.<\/p>\n<p>A direct message from Voss while still employed by Harold.<\/p>\n<p>Sent before Leon died.<\/p>\n<p>Toby stared at the date.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad was alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo while Dad was building the trust to protect Mom from them, Voss was telling them how it worked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My grief changed shape.<\/p>\n<p>Leon had known someone was circling.<\/p>\n<p>He simply had not known the circle had already reached inside his lawyer\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz photographed the email.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis materially changes things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens now?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe build the timeline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you arrest Voss?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot based on one old email.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about the recent fraud?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we can connect him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold said, \u201cThe trust inquiry does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt connects him to research.
