Not one message.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you going to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer lawyer is going to receive a very specific question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twenty minutes later, Cynthia called back.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine\u2019s attorney had responded.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine wanted to give a supplemental statement.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cynthia\u2019s voice was controlled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe admits she copied Sarah\u2019s signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everything stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I heard the refrigerator hum.<\/p>\n<p>A car pass outside.<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s quiet sob.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cynthia continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElaine says Marcus told her Sarah had authorized the transaction but could not be present.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she believe him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why copy the signature instead of writing authorized representative?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe admits she knew that was improper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much did Marcus pay her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive hundred dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Five hundred.<\/p>\n<p>My signature.<\/p>\n<p>My house.<\/p>\n<p>My financial identity.<\/p>\n<p>Five hundred dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Dad whispered, \u201cJesus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cDid Marcus tell her to copy it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cynthia paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElaine says no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe claims she suggested it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo avoid delaying the lien.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>Convenience.<\/p>\n<p>The most ordinary excuse in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine copied my signature because paperwork was in the way.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus accepted it because he needed money.<\/p>\n<p>David signed unauthorized consent because he wanted the sale closed.<\/p>\n<p>Mom delivered the samples because she wanted the missing money restored.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody needed to sit in a room and declare a conspiracy.<\/p>\n<p>They only needed to decide, one by one, that my permission was less important than their problem.<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I wasn\u2019t ready for her apology.<\/p>\n<p>Not because it was meaningless.<\/p>\n<p>Because I had heard enough apologies without consequences.<\/p>\n<p>Dad sat beside me.<\/p>\n<p>Not touching.<\/p>\n<p>Just there.<\/p>\n<p>After a while he said, \u201cWhat do you need?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>Not what should we do.<\/p>\n<p>Not how do we fix this.<\/p>\n<p>What do you need?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need everyone to stop deciding things for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom whispered, \u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel nodded too.<\/p>\n<p>My phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>Cynthia again.<\/p>\n<p>One final message.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine had provided an old email to support her statement.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus had sent it the night before the lien was signed.<\/p>\n<p>The subject line:<\/p>\n<p>Sarah authorization.<\/p>\n<p>The body was short.<\/p>\n<p>Mom says Sarah would approve if she knew. Need this done before closing.
