D consent tonight.<\/p>\n<p>Initials underneath:<\/p>\n<p>MW.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus Whitaker.<\/p>\n<p>My brother had coordinated it.<\/p>\n<p>But handwriting was not proof he personally forged my signature.<\/p>\n<p>Then David sent another image.<\/p>\n<p>A photocopy of my driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n<p>Across the top, handwritten:<\/p>\n<p>Sample.<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cOh God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A signature sample.<\/p>\n<p>Mom had given Marcus my closing folder.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were copies of my identification and signatures.<\/p>\n<p>He had what he needed.<\/p>\n<p>I sent everything to Cynthia.<\/p>\n<p>She went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah, preserve the originals if David has them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll arrange collection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you think Marcus signed my name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to guess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I appreciated that.<\/p>\n<p>But I already knew what I believed.<\/p>\n<p>My brother had studied my assets.<\/p>\n<p>Used my money.<\/p>\n<p>Obtained my signature samples.<\/p>\n<p>Coordinated a lien I never authorized.<\/p>\n<p>And let me believe for years that my divorce finances had been ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>I drove back to my parents\u2019 house with Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>Mom was waiting.<\/p>\n<p>I placed the copied cover sheet in front of her.<\/p>\n<p>She read it.<\/p>\n<p>Her face collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou gave him the folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou gave him my signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know about the lien?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said earlier you didn\u2019t know how Sarah\u2019s money was replaced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom began crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew there was temporary security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgainst Sarah\u2019s house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know the details.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know I hadn\u2019t agreed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>That answered me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew you hadn\u2019t been told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means you knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad walked away.<\/p>\n<p>Mom whispered, \u201cI thought it would be released before closing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you would never be harmed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s your defense for everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice stayed quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou thought harm only counted if the money stayed missing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t count fear because I didn\u2019t know enough to feel it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her tears fell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t count betrayal because I didn\u2019t know enough to recognize it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t count risk because the worst thing didn\u2019t happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat across from her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus used my house as collateral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you let him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice barely existed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad returned.<\/p>\n<p>His face was pale.<\/p>\n<p>He held his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarianne called.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed from exhaustion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrant Harrison has retained criminal counsel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel straightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhitmore referred the documents to authorities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Grant\u2019s attorney sent a preservation notice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll communications involving Marcus, Natalie, Pierce, Evan, and our family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s preparing to fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad placed the phone down.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mom\u2019s phone, still powered off, suddenly lit when she connected it to charge.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of queued messages appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Most from Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>One stood out.<\/p>\n<p>I know they found the old lien.
