gratitude.<\/p>\n<p>Just recognition.<\/p>\n<p>The call ended.<\/p>\n<p>For several minutes, neither of us moved.<\/p>\n<p>Then Rachel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you remember what Leo asked?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether he ordered the wrong thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the name.<\/p>\n<p>My father.<\/p>\n<p>My son.<\/p>\n<p>Categories.<\/p>\n<p>Functions.<\/p>\n<p>Weaknesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m done being the person who pays to make everybody comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel smiled sadly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Dad.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarianne has Natalie\u2019s first outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo police?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCounsel won\u2019t say yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegulators?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrant?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company has suspended all dealings with Harrison Land Group.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was significant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the strip?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOff market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor good?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Relief moved through me.<\/p>\n<p>The immediate development threat was finished.<\/p>\n<p>Then Dad said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarianne found the original valuation replacement valuation.<\/p>\n<p>His sudden retirement.<\/p>\n<p>If the deal was questioned, the story could become:<\/p>\n<p>Robert undervalued land.<\/p>\n<p>Robert retired.<\/p>\n<p>Robert received payment.<\/p>\n<p>New management completed transaction.<\/p>\n<p>A neat scandal.<\/p>\n<p>Except Dad had not done any of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were building a trail around you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo protect the people who actually did it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarianne says the pending payment wasn\u2019t only supposed to go to MW Holdings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe routing instructions were designed to pass through Bellweather first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>She heard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBellweather?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus and Natalie\u2019s company.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s name would be attached to money flowing into the company Marcus intended to use against Grant.<\/p>\n<p>Every layer pointed at another.<\/p>\n<p>Grant blamed Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus prepared to blame Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Pierce could blame Dad.<\/p>\n<p>Evan could blame procedure.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie blamed Grant.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone had built exits.<\/p>\n<p>Dad whispered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody in that deal trusted anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the table covered in documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why they kept records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that\u2019s why we can prove it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad was silent.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew what he meant.<\/p>\n<p>Proof did not automatically equal justice.<\/p>\n<p>But it was a beginning.<\/p>\n<p>Before hanging up, Dad said one more thing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome over tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother wants to talk to both of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says there\u2019s one account we still haven\u2019t discussed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed from exhaustion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe won\u2019t tell me until you\u2019re here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That worried me more than the amount.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she says the account is in your name.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a
