Robert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd preserve your phone exactly as it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo deleting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marianne left.<\/p>\n<p>The house became quiet again.<\/p>\n<p>Dad sat at the table.<\/p>\n<p>Mom remained across from him.<\/p>\n<p>I expected them to argue.<\/p>\n<p>Instead Dad asked one question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you want me retired early?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you were tired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus said you would be happier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s still about me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She started crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe also said once you retired, we could stop worrying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s expression tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>She believed Harrison would pay.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus would repay everything.<\/p>\n<p>The hidden loans would vanish.<\/p>\n<p>Dad would retire without ever knowing.<\/p>\n<p>Mom could enter the next stage of their marriage with the past cleaned up.<\/p>\n<p>Retirement had not only been Marcus\u2019s deadline.<\/p>\n<p>It had been hers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Harrison worked,\u201d Dad said slowly, \u201cyou planned to put everything back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus said he would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then you would never tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded.<\/p>\n<p>That hurt more than the answer would have if she had said yes.<\/p>\n<p>Because it confirmed the plan.<\/p>\n<p>Not confession.<\/p>\n<p>Restoration.<\/p>\n<p>Replace the money.<\/p>\n<p>Erase the evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Proceed.<\/p>\n<p>He stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to walk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom immediately rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to go alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He took his coat.<\/p>\n<p>At the door, he turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay with her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf she wants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom whispered, \u201cI do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then he left.<\/p>\n<p>I watched him walk down the street.<\/p>\n<p>No briefcase.<\/p>\n<p>No schedule.<\/p>\n<p>No office waiting.<\/p>\n<p>Retired.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, perhaps, truly retired.<\/p>\n<p>Mom sat back down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe hates me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe should.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if he leaves?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>That was the correct answer.<\/p>\n<p>Not reassurance.<\/p>\n<p>Not panic.<\/p>\n<p>Truth.<\/p>\n<p>Her phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>She stared.<\/p>\n<p>Another text.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re making me the fall guy. Ask Dad what Pierce knew.<\/p>\n<p>Mom showed me.<\/p>\n<p>I read it.<\/p>\n<p>Then another arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Grant says he never promised 8%. He\u2019s wiping everything.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t going to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>Please.<\/p>\n<p>Mom closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>The phone kept buzzing.<\/p>\n<p>Finally she powered it off.<\/p>\n<p>Not deleted.<\/p>\n<p>Not hidden.<\/p>\n<p>Off.<\/p>\n<p>She placed it on the table.<\/p>\n<p>An hour later, Dad returned.<\/p>\n<p>He looked calmer.<\/p>\n<p>Not happy.<\/p>\n<p>Calmer.<\/p>\n<p>Before anyone spoke, my phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Marianne.<\/p>\n<p>Dad took it.<\/p>\n<p>He listened.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResigned?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Pierce?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvan and Randall resigned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes that mean it\u2019s over?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Marianne says resignation doesn\u2019t stop the investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd audit found something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost didn\u2019t want to ask.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhitmore made a consulting payment six months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBellweather Acquisitions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus\u2019s second company.<\/p>\n<p>The one supposedly created to protect him from Harrison.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s voice went flat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFifty thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went still.<\/p>\n<p>Bellweather had existed three months, according to the public filing Rachel found.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then corrected himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe filing date we saw was an amendment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company existed earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much earlier?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at the notes he had written during Marianne\u2019s call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>Bellweather wasn\u2019t a fallback Marcus created recently.<\/p>\n<p>It predated the current crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe even the current development.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked toward Mom.<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never heard of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I believed her.<\/p>\n<p>Dad whispered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen whatever Marcus has been doing through Bellweather started before any of us knew there was a Harrison project.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feeleverystory.online\/?p=12562\">Click here to continue reading: PART 23: Bellweather Led Back to the First Successful Deal Marcus Hid, and Rachel Discovered the Affair Had Begun Much Earlier Than He Admitted<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Marianne came to the house herself Monday morning.
