was in Lakewood?”

Mom nodded.

“How much?”

“The forty.”

“All of it?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“He lost it.”

Dad whispered, “So before Harrison, he already lost forty thousand of my money in another development.”

Mom’s voice broke.

“Yes.”

“And then he invested thirty thousand in Harrison.”

“Yes.”

“On credit.”

“Yes.”

Dad laughed once.

It sounded hollow.

“This wasn’t desperation.”

Nobody answered.

He looked at us.

“This was gambling.”

Not casino gambling.

But the same belief.

One more risk.

One more deal.

One more chance to recover the last loss.

Marcus had not been digging out.

He had been doubling down.

Mom whispered, “He said Harrison would make everything back.”

Dad stared at her.

“And you believed him.”

“I needed to.”

That sentence made sense in the worst way.

If Harrison succeeded, then perhaps every previous lie became worthwhile.

The stolen money returned.

The debt disappeared.

The family never had to know.

Mom had not merely protected Marcus.

She had become invested in his rescue succeeding.

That explained why she kept going.

Why she forged again.

Why she hid money.

Why she pressured me.

Why she needed Dad retired quietly.

The project had become her exit from the consequences too.

Rachel said it aloud.

“You needed Harrison to work.”

Mom started crying harder.

“Yes.”

There it was.

The central truth beneath all the smaller ones.

Not loyalty alone.

Not favoritism alone.

Fear.

If the development failed, Mom’s hidden borrowing and forged signatures would remain uncovered by repayment.

Success was supposed to erase the evidence.

Dad looked at her.

“And that’s why you helped him at dinner.”

She nodded.

“You needed the project to get through Monday.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know about Evan?”

“No.”

“Natalie?”

“Only as a consultant.”

“The deed fraud?”

“I knew enough.”

Dad nodded slowly.

That was as close to accepting the truth as he could get.

My phone buzzed again.

Marcus.

One final message.

If Mom doesn’t explain Lakewood, I will.

Dad saw the preview.

He looked at Mom.

“What is there left to explain?”

Mom stared at the message.

Then whispered:

“Marcus wasn’t the only person who lost money in Lakewood.”
