Above that amount, more senior review was required.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they undervalue the strip,\u201d he said, \u201cthey could avoid scrutiny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that illegal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnethical?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf deliberately manipulated, absolutely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould the land be worth more than the threshold?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this project depending on it, much more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel kept searching.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo hundred forty thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s low.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow low?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPotentially half.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Harrison gets a critical access parcel cheaply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus gets his development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Evan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what I want to know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel found another page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA payment schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInitials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She read them.<\/p>\n<p>M.W.<\/p>\n<p>N.C.<\/p>\n<p>And E.P.<\/p>\n<p>Dad went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cE.P.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvan Pike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom whispered, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel read the line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty-five thousand upon access acquisition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad sat down.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>The implication was obvious.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie.<\/p>\n<p>Evan.<\/p>\n<p>All stood to receive money if the strip changed hands.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the clock.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday morning now.<\/p>\n<p>The revised surplus review was scheduled for Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had retired Friday.<\/p>\n<p>They expected him gone.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cCan you contact Whitmore?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m retired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t warn them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGeneral counsel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you trust them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause at one in the morning, I\u2019ll sound like an angry former employee repeating family accusations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed toward Rachel\u2019s phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need copies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel said, \u201cI\u2019ll send everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen first thing tomorrow, I call legal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom whispered, \u201cWhat happens to Marcus?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She started crying.<\/p>\n<p>He did not change course.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel sent the files.<\/p>\n<p>Dad opened them on his tablet.<\/p>\n<p>We read until nearly three.<\/p>\n<p>The pattern became clearer with every page.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus had spent nearly two years trying to position himself inside Harrison\u2019s development.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie had been the bridge.<\/p>\n<p>Evan had apparently become the internal path.<\/p>\n<p>Mom had unknowingly supplied Dad\u2019s company information, then knowingly supplied money and forged paperwork for Marcus\u2019s separate financial problems.<\/p>\n<p>Different schemes had overlapped.<\/p>\n<p>One person connected all of them.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>At 3:17 a.m., Dad found an email that made him stop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned the tablet.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie to Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf your father asks about valuation, remind him Sarah is covering the retirement event and Helen wants zero conflict.
