so, sweetheart. Grab your school bag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus\u2019s voice came from behind her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re taking my kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stopped.<\/p>\n<p>There was the phrase Mom had said Marcus feared.<\/p>\n<p>Except now it was happening because of his own choices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am taking our children to my sister\u2019s for the night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t just\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re proving exactly what I told Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel laughed softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told Mom I threatened this before you committed any of these acts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou invented the threat so she would help you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel continued upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Within fifteen minutes, four sleepy children were dressed enough to leave.<\/p>\n<p>I stayed on the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus followed them to the front door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re making a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel opened it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve made plenty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeaving for one night isn\u2019t one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She put the children in the car.<\/p>\n<p>Before getting in, she said to me, \u201cI\u2019ll call when we reach Melissa\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>I remained in my car outside Mom and Dad\u2019s house for another minute.<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>Not Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>I almost ignored it.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice was furious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou got what you wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared ahead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did I want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy family is leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t put Natalie\u2019s passport in your safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have hated me for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, you have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI resented you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always thought Mom favored me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo this is revenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou found one mistake and turned everybody against me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne mistake?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I began counting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hidden credit cards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mortgage arrears.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe forged deed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t forge\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad\u2019s forged authorization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom did that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe twelve thousand from my account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe seventy-five thousand from Harrison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe secret condo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He breathed hard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t understand the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does Dad\u2019s retirement have to do with it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn\u2019t nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI misspoke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was supposed to happen before Dad retired?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hung up.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the house, Mom appeared in the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>She had been watching me.<\/p>\n<p>I went back inside.<\/p>\n<p>Dad was still at the dining changed.<\/p>\n<p>Not recognition exactly.<\/p>\n<p>Something close.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know the name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve heard be finished before Dad retired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does my retirement have to do with the development?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s face drained.<\/p>\n<p>There.<\/p>\n<p>That was the reaction.<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She backed away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t what you think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently nothing is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does my retirement have to do with Marcus\u2019s project?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Dad.<\/p>\n<p>Finally she sat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom whispered, \u201cThe land behind Marcus\u2019s property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>I had no idea what she meant.<\/p>\n<p>He did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat land?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe access strip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad main road without crossing a narrow parcel behind Marcus\u2019s property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho owns it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at Mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A cold silence followed.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI managed facilities and property records for forty-one years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus had not merely needed Dad retired.<\/p>\n<p>He had needed Dad no longer sitting inside the company that controlled a critical piece of land.<\/p>\n<p>Dad whispered, \u201cHe was waiting for me to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom
