document.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the forged signature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to know exactly what my retirement looks like now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The wording struck me.<\/p>\n<p>Not what it should look like.<\/p>\n<p>What it actually looked like.<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom wiped her face.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sleeping in the guest room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve talked more honestly tonight than we have in years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He walked toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo home to Leo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>As I gathered my folder, Mom said my name.<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>She looked smaller than she had at dinner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did love you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The past tense landed strangely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean\u2014I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She began crying again.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLove wasn\u2019t the part you failed at.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFairness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I picked up my bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd honesty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stood at the end of the hall listening.<\/p>\n<p>Mom lowered her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I left.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, the air was colder.<\/p>\n<p>I sat in my car but didn\u2019t start it.<\/p>\n<p>My phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>I answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was low.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Marcus there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI opened the safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat safe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one in Marcus\u2019s office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat straighter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know the code?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s our son\u2019s birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She didn\u2019t answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>When she did, her voice sounded different.<\/p>\n<p>Not angry.<\/p>\n<p>Not frightened.<\/p>\n<p>Stunned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDocuments?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA passport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She whispered a woman\u2019s name I didn\u2019t recognize.<\/p>\n<p>Then added:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd there\u2019s a lease for the downtown condo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared through the windshield.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt started six months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho signed it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah, he wasn\u2019t planning to leave
