Please don\u2019t be angry before I explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Dad gave a bitter laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus said, \u201cDad, just listen to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere you talking to her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how does she know what I found?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel said, \u201cCheck his call log.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCheck it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not giving you my phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I already know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad said, \u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We all went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward Leo\u2019s bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t leave him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBring him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He had heard enough tonight.<\/p>\n<p>I called my neighbor, Denise.<\/p>\n<p>She had watched Leo for me dozens of times.<\/p>\n<p>It was late, but she answered.<\/p>\n<p>Five minutes later she was crossing the street in slippers and a coat.<\/p>\n<p>I told Dad I was on my way.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel said, \u201cI\u2019m coming too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus immediately objected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>Dad said, \u201cBring the loan file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus said, \u201cNobody should be driving around this late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel replied, \u201cThen stay home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hung up.<\/p>\n<p>I packed the statements and the cashier\u2019s-check receipt.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, I checked on Leo.<\/p>\n<p>He was asleep on his side, one hand under his cheek.<\/p>\n<p>Eight years old.<\/p>\n<p>The entire night had begun because adults believed he deserved less dinner than four other children.<\/p>\n<p>Now we were talking about forged signatures and hidden mortgages.<\/p>\n<p>I kissed his hair.<\/p>\n<p>Denise sat in the living room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The drive to Dad\u2019s took eleven minutes.<\/p>\n<p>I made it in nine.<\/p>\n<p>His porch light was on.<\/p>\n<p>The front door opened before I reached it.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>On the dining table were the lender papers.<\/p>\n<p>He had arranged them in neat rows.<\/p>\n<p>Forty-one years in operations had made him methodical.<\/p>\n<p>Even furious, he organized.<\/p>\n<p>I put my folder beside his.<\/p>\n<p>We compared documents.<\/p>\n<p>The dates matched.<\/p>\n<p>The amounts matched.<\/p>\n<p>The twelve-thousand-dollar gift letter matched my cashier\u2019s check.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared at my deposit history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis money was yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told the lender it was hers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sat down.<\/p>\n<p>For a long moment he said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then he asked, \u201cHow much have you given her altogether?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust under fifty thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had no idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought she was helping you sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me you were having trouble after the divorce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never asked her for money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat she covered school costs sometimes. Groceries.
