I\u2019m not afraid he\u2019ll hurt me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m afraid he\u2019ll destroy documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was different.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBack up everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmail copies to yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sent them to my work account and my sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Good.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about his devices?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not touching them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was quiet for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>Then said, \u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course there was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe deed says the transfer was for consideration of ten dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s common wording.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the notary\u2019s address is familiar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI searched it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt belongs to one of your mother\u2019s friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing for a second.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElaine Porter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew the name.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine and Mom had been friends for years.<\/p>\n<p>Book club.<\/p>\n<p>Church fundraisers.<\/p>\n<p>Holiday lunches.<\/p>\n<p>I had met her dozens of times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElaine is a notary?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My kitchen suddenly felt too quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel said, \u201cIf I never signed that deed, then either Elaine notarized a signature she didn\u2019t witness or somebody forged more than just my name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t confront anyone tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow we need the original documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked down at the bank receipt.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>My money.<\/p>\n<p>A title company.<\/p>\n<p>A deed Rachel said she never signed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom told me Dad\u2019s retirement statements were involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes your dad know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to tell him before tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the clock.<\/p>\n<p>Almost eleven.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had spent forty-one years working.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight was his first night retired.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to give him one night without another catastrophe.<\/p>\n<p>But I remembered Mom\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p>Her fear.<\/p>\n<p>If she went home with him now, she had hours to alter whatever paperwork remained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m calling him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad answered on the third ring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice sounded tired.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Mom with you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said she needed to stop at the pharmacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At eleven at night.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad, where are the retirement papers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe statements. Pension. 401(k).
