Don\u2019t turn it into \u2018us\u2019 now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel, this isn\u2019t the place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She gave a short laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou made it the place when you signed this here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom shifted in her chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t worth destroying an evening over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith respect, Helen, it\u2019s my credit card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom pressed her lips together.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t need to say anything.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus had spent years being good at arguments because most people eventually became tired enough to let him win.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight there were too many witnesses.<\/p>\n<p>Dad asked, \u201cWhy did you tell me you were covering the upgrades?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am covering them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You told me you were paying for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSame thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked irritated.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you wrote something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus\u2019s eyes flicked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>I saw the exact moment he understood.<\/p>\n<p>The email.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wrote that you would \u2018handle Sarah at dinner.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel turned slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wrote what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stared at Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou showed her that email?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI forwarded her the reservation confirmation. I didn\u2019t know the earlier messages were attached.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I folded my arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cActually, it was very believable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou read Dad\u2019s private emails?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe sent them to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew about the upgrades?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew you planned them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor how long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you still came?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause this dinner is for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then I looked at Leo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd because my son was invited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo sat quietly beside me, watching Daniel prepare a place for the replacement dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus scoffed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was included.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I glanced toward the doorway where his hot dog had disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was your idea of inclusion?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah, enough about the hot dog.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word felt strange and good at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to stop mentioning what happened because hearing it makes you uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was one dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was one child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked away.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour grandchildren received what was promised. One didn\u2019t. Somehow the one who didn\u2019t was mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re making it personal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou personally called yesterday and changed his order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo why yesterday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat difference does that make?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t think about it until then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I studied him.<\/p>\n<p>Something was wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus had voluntarily added thousands of dollars in food and wine.<\/p>\n<p>Yet one day before the event, saving $120 had suddenly become important enough for him to call the restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>One steak.<\/p>\n<p>Leo\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the email.<\/p>\n<p>Premium wine.<\/p>\n<p>Upgraded menu.<\/p>\n<p>More appetizers.<\/p>\n<p>He had not behaved like someone pinching pennies.<\/p>\n<p>So why make that particular change?<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward Julia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere there any other modifications yesterday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus\u2019s head snapped toward her.<\/p>\n<p>That reaction was so quick he couldn\u2019t hide it.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel saw it too.<\/p>\n<p>Julia looked through the papers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would need to check the event log.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus laughed nervously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor God\u2019s sake, Sarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia walked toward a service station along the wall.<\/p>\n<p>I watched Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>His right foot had started bouncing under the table.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked down.<\/p>\n<p>Then at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else did you change?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are you nervous?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re shaking the table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped his leg.<\/p>\n<p>At that moment Daniel returned carrying a large plate.<\/p>\n<p>The smell reached us first\u2014garlic, butter, pepper, roasted vegetables.<\/p>\n<p>Then he placed the filet in front of Leo.<\/p>\n<p>My son\u2019s eyes widened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I eat it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question caught in my chest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel offered to cut the steak.<\/p>\n<p>Leo shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He worked carefully with the knife, cut a small piece, chewed it, and smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is really good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several people laughed softly.<\/p>\n<p>Even Dad smiled.<\/p>\n<p>For half a minute the room became what it should have been from the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>A family dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Then Julia returned.<\/p>\n<p>She was holding another sheet of paper.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus saw it.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou asked whether anything else was modified yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was another request.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus pushed his chair back.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia checked the page.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cWhat changed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe seating arrangement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked down the long table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe seating?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus jumped in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople move seats. It happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis change was made before the event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned the sheet toward me.<\/p>\n<p>It was a seating chart.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-seven names.<\/p>\n<p>Dad in the central place.<\/p>\n<p>Mom beside him.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus and Rachel nearby.<\/p>\n<p>Their four children clustered around them.<\/p>\n<p>Aunts, uncles, cousins.<\/p>\n<p>Then I found mine.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>My original seat had been beside Dad.<\/p>\n<p>Leo had been beside me.<\/p>\n<p>Both names were crossed out.<\/p>\n<p>Red arrows moved us to the far end.<\/p>\n<p>Exactly where we had been placed when we arrived.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou moved us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad wanted the grandchildren near him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at his children sitting near Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeo is his grandson.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI meant\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Dad heard him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus rubbed his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was organizing twenty-seven people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia pointed toward a handwritten notation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was an instruction with the change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat instruction?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus reached toward the page.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel caught his wrist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He glared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet her read it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet her read it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia looked uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She read the instruction.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Bennett and her son were to be moved away from the immediate-family section and seated at the end if possible.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>I looked down the table.<\/p>\n<p>Immediate family.<\/p>\n<p>Dad.<\/p>\n<p>Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>Their children.<\/p>\n<p>And apparently not us.<\/p>\n<p>Leo\u2019s fork stopped above his steak.<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>He couldn\u2019t look at me.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stood so quickly his napkin dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wrote that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad, it doesn\u2019t mean what you think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad pointed at the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else could it mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked toward Mom.<\/p>\n<p>That was his mistake.<\/p>\n<p>Mom suddenly became fascinated by her plate.<\/p>\n<p>Dad saw it.<\/p>\n<p>So did I.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGod,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked up.<\/p>\n<p>I had spent the entire evening believing Marcus was the architect of what had happened.<\/p>\n<p>The upgrades.<\/p>\n<p>The planned pressure.<\/p>\n<p>The hot dog.<\/p>\n<p>The seating.<\/p>\n<p>But the fear on his face when he looked at our mother told a different story.<\/p>\n<p>I asked her, \u201cDid you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face went pale.<\/p>\n<p>Dad said, \u201cHelen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>I expected her to deny everything.<\/p>\n<p>Instead she looked at the seating chart and spoke so quietly I almost missed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe seating was my idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo lowered his fork.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared at his wife.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>And suddenly I understood that the hot dog had never been about saving $120.<\/p>\n<p>It had been a message.<\/p>\n<p>The seating chart was another.<\/p>\n<p>My son and I had not accidentally ended up at the edge of my father\u2019s retirement dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Someone wanted us there.<\/p>\n<p>And my mother had just admitted that someone was her.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feeleverystory.online\/?p=12543\">Click here to continue reading: PART 4: My Mother Finally Explained Why My Son Had Been Moved Away, and Her Reason Changed the Entire Family Argument<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rachel kept the addendum in front of her. \u201cHow much will hit our Visa?\u201d Julia answered with the same measured tone she had used all evening. \u201cThe final balance won\u2019t &hellip;
