Her hands rested against the black folder. Her posture was straight. Her expression revealed nothing.<\/p>\n<p>That professionalism made Marcus look worse.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cWhen was it signed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia checked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree days ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>He had emailed Dad two days ago.<\/p>\n<p>The timing fit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly did he authorize?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus cut in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you. Upgrades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Julia can tell me what they were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah, your father is sitting right there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes. He is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad set his glass down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelen, let her ask.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s eyes tightened.<\/p>\n<p>That was unusual.<\/p>\n<p>Dad normally chose peace, particularly in public. He had spent most of his marriage defusing conflict by pretending it would disappear if nobody touched it.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight he seemed to understand that ignoring the problem would not put Leo\u2019s steak back on the menu or erase $4,264 in unexpected charges.<\/p>\n<p>Julia read from the event sheet.<\/p>\n<p>The original package included the private room, the fixed dinner menu, standard wine service, nonalcoholic drinks, dessert, staffing, and the children\u2019s meals.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus had added premium wine.<\/p>\n<p>Additional appetizers.<\/p>\n<p>An upgraded seafood course.<\/p>\n<p>A more expensive dessert selection.<\/p>\n<p>Several other items.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me the wine was included.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is included.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn your upgrade?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what I asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom tried again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel, sweetheart, this is a celebration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith a bill I apparently don\u2019t know about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus said, \u201cYou don\u2019t need to worry about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence landed badly.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s expression became colder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m your wife. If you spent more than four thousand dollars tonight, I think I\u2019m allowed to worry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t spend four thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia looked down.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus saw her do it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d he demanded.<\/p>\n<p>She answered carefully. \u201cThe difference between the original authorization and the current projected total is approximately $4,264.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aunt Linda, sitting several places away, stopped with her fork halfway to her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou added four thousand two hundred and sixty-four dollars to a retirement dinner?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad spoke from the center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop using me as an excuse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would have been perfectly happy with hamburgers in the backyard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few people smiled uneasily.<\/p>\n<p>Dad didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wanted something bigger,\u201d he said. \u201cFine. But don\u2019t stand there saying you did it because I required it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to do something special.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen pay for something special.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The confidence in his answer was impressive.<\/p>\n<p>It might even have worked if I hadn\u2019t read his email.<\/p>\n<p>I folded my hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re paying the difference, then there\u2019s no problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned to Julia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease bring Leo the meal originally ordered for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat part?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaking them prepare a whole steak now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis cousins are eating theirs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe already has food.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo\u2019s face lowered.<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice came out quieter than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is sitting right here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus glanced at Leo, then away.<\/p>\n<p>For all his talk about money, he seemed to have forgotten the person he had decided was worth less was listening.<\/p>\n<p>I turned to Leo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you still want your steak?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me cautiously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill anybody be mad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A sharp silence followed.<\/p>\n<p>I hated that question more than I hated the hot dog.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He glanced at Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Grandma.<\/p>\n<p>Mom was studying her napkin.<\/p>\n<p>Leo whispered, \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Julia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease bring it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded and motioned toward the server, Daniel, who removed the untouched hot dog.<\/p>\n<p>As he lifted the plate, Marcus muttered, \u201cThere goes another hundred and twenty dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad heard him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked toward him.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s face was flat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Sarah authorized five steak dinners, why did you decide her son was the one who shouldn\u2019t have one?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus shifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you. I was trying to control costs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel gave him a disbelieving look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou added premium wine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s for everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Leo\u2019s steak wasn\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus rubbed his forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re twisting this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I watched him.<\/p>\n<p>Something still didn\u2019t fit.<\/p>\n<p>If he had genuinely been concerned about cost, he could have left the original menu untouched.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he had added more than four thousand dollars in extras and then taken the trouble to save $120 by downgrading exactly one child.<\/p>\n<p>My child.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cWhy Leo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you remove Leo\u2019s meal instead of one of your children\u2019s?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s head turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus laughed without humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeriously?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t going to change my kids\u2019 meals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re my kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words were out before he could catch them.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>I felt Leo\u2019s shoulder beside mine.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cAnd Leo is what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t mean it like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you mean it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s your responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>A small sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Almost ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>And somehow uglier than shouting.<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are your upgrades my responsibility?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus\u2019s mouth opened.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing came out.<\/p>\n<p>Mom intervened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is going too far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou keep saying that whenever Marcus has to answer a question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you\u2019re embarrassing him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I glanced around the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe changed an eight-year-old\u2019s dinner and tried to add thousands of dollars to an event I\u2019m paying for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he\u2019s paying the extra.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen there should be nothing embarrassing about discussing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked toward Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert, say something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to see the paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia lifted the folder slightly.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every eye in the room turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>He realized immediately how that sounded.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel was the first to respond.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause this has become ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat\u2019s ridiculous is learning in front of twenty-seven relatives that my husband spent thousands of dollars I didn\u2019t know about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you I upgraded things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me the restaurant gave you a better package.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me the wine was included.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus\u2019s silence answered for him.<\/p>\n<p>Mom said, \u201cRachel, I\u2019m sure there\u2019s an explanation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Only for a second.<\/p>\n<p>But I saw it.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel saw it too.<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew Marcus wanted the evening to be nice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what I asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom straightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is Robert\u2019s retirement. I didn\u2019t think every expense needed to become a committee discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEight thousand seven hundred and sixty-four dollars isn\u2019t a small expense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I glanced at Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>He looked irritated rather than ashamed.<\/p>\n<p>That bothered me.<\/p>\n<p>A person caught overspending should have been scrambling to explain how he intended to cover the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus was trying to stop us from seeing the documents.<\/p>\n<p>I thought about his email again.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll handle her at the dinner.<\/p>\n<p>She usually caves when Mom gets involved.<\/p>\n<p>My card was capped at $4,500.<\/p>\n<p>So why was he nervous?<\/p>\n<p>I asked Julia, \u201cDoes the addendum change my authorization?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus immediately said, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Your card remains capped at the original amount.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was good news.<\/p>\n<p>But Marcus\u2019s reaction told me there was bad news attached.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo how are the additional charges being paid?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia shifted the folder into her other hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe addendum contains a separate payment authorization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel slowly turned toward Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>He looked down.<\/p>\n<p>I understood before she did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus glared at me.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou actually put down another card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s chair moved slightly as she sat straighter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat card?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat card, Marcus?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at his plate.<\/p>\n<p>She repeated the question.<\/p>\n<p>This time every word was separate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat. Card?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur Visa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel went still.<\/p>\n<p>I watched the color leave her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Visa we just paid down?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t a number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked toward Julia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo we have to do this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia replied, \u201cI\u2019m only answering questions from the parties listed on the agreements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost admired her composure.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel pointed toward the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to see what he signed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus moved faster than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>His hand came down over Julia\u2019s folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-seven people saw him do it.<\/p>\n<p>Dad pushed his chair away from the table.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared at her husband\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<p>Then at his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus,\u201d she said quietly, \u201ctake your hand off that folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did.<\/p>\n<p>Slowly.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Julia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMay we see the addendum?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She opened the folder.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus whispered, \u201cSarah, don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I met his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>For years those two words had worked surprisingly well on me.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t make trouble.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t embarrass Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t ruin Dad\u2019s evening.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t turn everything into a fight.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight my son had been handed a dry hot dog while four other grandchildren ate $120 steaks.<\/p>\n<p>I was finished being useful enough to pay and inconvenient enough to silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShow us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia removed two sheets.<\/p>\n<p>One was the agreement I had signed.<\/p>\n<p>The other carried Marcus\u2019s signature.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel reached for the second page.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes moved down the print.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis says you personally accepted responsibility for every charge above Sarah\u2019s authorization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStandard language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked back at the document.<\/p>\n<p>Julia indicated a paragraph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Whitaker specifically requested that Ms. Bennett\u2019s card remain capped at $4,500.
