Each plate held a thick filet, whipped potatoes, glazed carrots, and a little silver cup of sauce.<\/p>\n<p>Then he put a fifth plate in front of my eight-year-old son.<\/p>\n<p>A hot dog.<\/p>\n<p>No garnish. No fries. No vegetables. Just a pale sausage inside a dry bun on an oversized white plate.<\/p>\n<p>Leo looked at his cousins\u2019 steaks, then at his dinner. He didn\u2019t complain. That was what hurt first.<\/p>\n<p>He simply folded his hands into his lap and asked, \u201cMom, did I order the wrong thing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Across the table, my brother Marcus kept cutting his steak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>I knew exactly what Leo had ordered because I had confirmed the menu myself.<\/p>\n<p>This was my father Robert\u2019s retirement dinner. After forty-one years of work, he was finally leaving the company where he had spent most of his adult life, and I had offered to pay for a private family celebration. Twenty-seven people had come: my parents, Marcus and his wife Rachel, their four children, Leo and me, plus aunts, uncles, and cousins.<\/p>\n<p>The restaurant wasn\u2019t cheap, but Dad had never asked us for much. I wanted one evening where he could sit at the center of a long table, drink the wine he liked, and let somebody else worry about the bill.<\/p>\n<p>I had agreed to a package totaling $4,500.<\/p>\n<p>More importantly, I had personally confirmed the children\u2019s meals.<\/p>\n<p>All five grandchildren were supposed to receive the same dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Filet.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus\u2019s oldest son was already slicing through his steak. His younger daughter dipped a piece into sauce.<\/p>\n<p>Leo touched the edge of his bun.<\/p>\n<p>I leaned toward him. \u201cDon\u2019t eat that yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His hand immediately retreated.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus finally looked up. \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I met his eyes. \u201cWhy does Leo have a hot dog?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He gave the plate a quick glance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKids\u2019 meal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe other kids have steak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey wanted steak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo did Leo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus shrugged. \u201cThen there must have been a mix-up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer came too smoothly.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stopped cutting her food and looked toward Leo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is weird,\u201d she said. \u201cI thought all the kids had the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo did I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus put another bite into his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>My mother, Helen, heard us from several seats away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah,\u201d she said, \u201cdon\u2019t make an issue out of dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked a question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Marcus answered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Marcus guessed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s mouth tightened in the familiar way that meant she wanted the subject closed.<\/p>\n<p>Leo whispered, \u201cIt\u2019s okay, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>He gave me a little smile that wasn\u2019t convincing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like hot dogs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew he did.<\/p>\n<p>That wasn\u2019t the point.<\/p>\n<p>For most of my life, I had been trained to let things go when Marcus was involved.<\/p>\n<p>If he borrowed something and returned it damaged, I was told accidents happened.<\/p>\n<p>If he forgot a birthday, he was busy.<\/p>\n<p>If he made a joke at my expense, I was sensitive.<\/p>\n<p>And whenever I objected, Mom somehow transformed the argument into a referendum on my personality.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah takes things personally.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah holds grudges.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah makes family gatherings uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>I had spent years wondering whether she was right.<\/p>\n<p>My divorce had cured me of some of that uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>Not all of it.<\/p>\n<p>But enough.<\/p>\n<p>I raised my hand to the server.<\/p>\n<p>He came over immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs there a problem, ma\u2019am?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes. My son was supposed to receive the filet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The server looked down at Leo\u2019s plate.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>Something passed across his face.<\/p>\n<p>Not confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll check on that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus put down his knife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no need to bother them. He has food.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just said it was probably a mix-up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt probably is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen they can fix it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo shifted beside me.<\/p>\n<p>I lowered my voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou haven\u2019t done anything wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded, but his shoulders remained tight.<\/p>\n<p>Dad noticed the tension from the center of the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything okay down there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine,\u201d Mom answered before I could.<\/p>\n<p>I looked past her toward Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re sorting out Leo\u2019s dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad glanced at the hot dog.<\/p>\n<p>His eyebrows drew together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought the kids were getting steaks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus leaned back. \u201cApparently there was a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom gave me a pointed look.<\/p>\n<p>Dad was supposed to be enjoying himself. I understood what she was asking without her saying it.<\/p>\n<p>Do not ruin this for him.<\/p>\n<p>That argument had worked on me many times.<\/p>\n<p>Not tonight.<\/p>\n<p>The server returned with a woman in a dark suit carrying a slim black folder.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized her.<\/p>\n<p>Julia.<\/p>\n<p>She was the restaurant\u2019s private-events manager and the person who had worked with me when I booked the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMs. Bennett?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood halfway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHi, Julia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her expression told me the hot dog had not been an accident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand there\u2019s a question about the children\u2019s menu.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She glanced toward Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus suddenly became very interested in his wine.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cWas Leo\u2019s meal changed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia paused.<\/p>\n<p>That pause was enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we finalized the reservation,\u201d she said carefully, \u201call five children were listed for the filet dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a modification afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stopped eating.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked down the table.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus said, \u201cIt was probably part of the head-count adjustment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt my stomach tighten.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho made the modification?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia opened her folder.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus\u2019s chair scraped softly against the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah,\u201d he said, \u201cseriously. It\u2019s a hot dog.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t look away from Julia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho changed it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She checked the paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe request came yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another hesitation.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cMr. Marcus Whitaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to shrink around us.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel turned toward her husband.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou changed Leo\u2019s dinner?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was one meal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou called this restaurant yesterday specifically to remove my son\u2019s steak?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t how it happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia remained beside us, professionally still.<\/p>\n<p>I asked her, \u201cWere any of the other children\u2019s meals changed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Only Leo.<\/p>\n<p>My eight-year-old son.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Marcus\u2019s four children.<\/p>\n<p>Four steaks.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Leo.<\/p>\n<p>One hot dog.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re making this into something it isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it, then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe package was getting expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a moment I thought I had misunderstood him.<\/p>\n<p>I glanced at the table.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-seven people.<\/p>\n<p>Bottles of wine I didn\u2019t recognize.<\/p>\n<p>Additional appetizers I had not ordered.<\/p>\n<p>A seafood platter near Dad.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus\u2019s steak.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s steak.<\/p>\n<p>His children\u2019s steaks.<\/p>\n<p>Then Leo\u2019s hot dog.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were worried about the cost?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf Leo\u2019s meal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a hundred and twenty dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd whose card is paying for this dinner?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>Just slightly.<\/p>\n<p>Mine.<\/p>\n<p>The reservation had been made in my name, and my card guaranteed the original $4,500 package.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Julia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore anything else, can you confirm the total authorization on my card?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCertainly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus immediately interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s unnecessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause this is Dad\u2019s dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know whose dinner it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re turning it into an accounting meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked what my card is authorized for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia opened the folder again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour thousand five hundred dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what I agreed to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did not close the folder.<\/p>\n<p>That bothered me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that still the total?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia looked at Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>She put down her fork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He rubbed his thumb along the stem of his wineglass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI added a few things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse slowed in the peculiar way it always did when I realized someone had been hiding something from me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat things?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetter wine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the bottles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA couple menu upgrades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah, come on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia quietly said, \u201cThere were several modifications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much is the dinner now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not need to do this in front of everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad said, \u201cSit down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked toward him.<\/p>\n<p>Dad rarely used that tone.<\/p>\n<p>My brother sat.<\/p>\n<p>Julia checked the event sheet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current projected total is eight thousand seven hundred and sixty-four dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody at our end of the table moved.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEight thousand what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus said, \u201cIt includes gratuity and service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou nearly doubled the dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s Dad\u2019s retirement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou changed a $4,500 event into an $8,764 event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I\u2019m covering the difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I watched his face.<\/p>\n<p>Two days earlier, Dad had forwarded me an email chain about the reservation.<\/p>\n<p>He hadn\u2019t realized Marcus\u2019s earlier messages were attached.<\/p>\n<p>I had read them twice.<\/p>\n<p>Then a third time.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus had written that he would handle me at dinner.<\/p>\n<p>He had written that I usually gave in once Mom became involved.<\/p>\n<p>I hadn\u2019t confronted him because part of me had hoped I was misunderstanding what he meant.<\/p>\n<p>Now Leo\u2019s dry hot dog sat between us like an answer.<\/p>\n<p>I reached down and touched my handbag.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a printed copy of that email.<\/p>\n<p>There was something else inside too.<\/p>\n<p>A folder of bank statements I had originally intended to discuss privately with my parents after dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus didn\u2019t know about those.<\/p>\n<p>Neither did Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Not yet.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Julia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf my authorization is capped at $4,500, who approved the additional charges?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus pushed back from the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia glanced down at her folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a signed addendum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel turned slowly toward her husband.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA signed what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>And suddenly the hot dog was no longer the
