30 – With Dallas Five Weeks Away, Liam and I Tried Dating Without Promises, and the First Real Disagreement Showed Whether Anything Had Actually Changed

Our second date was less magical than the first.

That turned out to be useful.

The restaurant was too loud.

Our waiter forgot my drink.

Liam ordered something he disliked and complained about it three times.

I was tired from work.

He was distracted by an issue with the Dallas relocation package.

For the first forty minutes, we were both slightly irritating.

It felt almost normal.

Then the first disagreement happened.

Small.

Stupid.

Important.

We were discussing the move.

Liam said his company wanted him in Dallas two weeks earlier than expected.

“That seems fast.”

“It is.”

“Are you going to do it?”

“Probably.”

“Why?”

He frowned.

“Because that’s when they want me.”

I looked at him.

“That isn’t an answer.”

His expression changed.

There.

I saw it.

The old defensive tightening around the mouth.

“What answer do you want?”

My body immediately braced.

I almost softened my question.

Almost said never mind.

Then stopped.

“I don’t want a particular answer.”

“You sound like you do.”

“Liam.”

He looked away.

The silence became uncomfortable.

I felt the old script forming.

He would accuse me of judging.

I would explain.

He would say I was making the move about us.

I would deny it.

Two hours gone.

Instead, Liam closed his eyes.

Then said, “I’m doing it.”

I waited.

“The thing.”

“What thing?”

“Deciding your question is an accusation.”

My body remained tense.

He breathed out.

“You asked why I’d move early.”

“Yes.”

“The honest answer is because I’m scared if I have too much time here, I’ll get more attached to seeing you.”

I stared at him.

That was not what I expected.

He continued.

“And part of me wants the move to happen fast so I don’t have to sit with that.”

My chest tightened.

“So you’re using the job as an escape.”

“Partly.”

“At least you know.”

“Yes.”

“Does that mean you shouldn’t go early?”

He shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

“Okay.”

He looked surprised.

“That’s it?”

“What do you want from me?”

“Nothing.”

“Then figure it out.”

He stared at me.

Then laughed softly.

“That is incredibly uncomfortable.”

“Good.”

We both laughed.

The tension dissolved.

Not because we agreed.

Because the disagreement did not become a verdict on either of us.

That mattered more than the topic.

After dinner, we walked two blocks.

Liam said, “That felt different.”

“Yes.”

“I wanted to fight you.”

“I noticed.”

“You looked terrified.”

I stopped.

“Terrified?”

“Not of me.”

He chose his words carefully.

“Of the conversation becoming what conversations used to become.”

I looked away.

He was right.

“That’s going to take time.”

“I know.”

I appreciated that he did not say he would prove himself.

No promises.

At my van, he asked before kissing me.

I said yes.

The kiss lasted longer this time.

His hand rested at my waist.

Mine touched his chest.

My body remembered him too easily.

When we separated, I did not step back as far.

Liam looked at me.

I knew what he wanted.

I wanted it too.

That frightened me.

“Not yet,” I said.

He nodded immediately.

“Okay.”

No disappointment performed.

No persuasion.

I drove home feeling both relieved and frustrated.

Physical intimacy had once been simple between us.

Now it carried history.

That was probably healthy.

Annoying.

But healthy.

Over the next two weeks, we saw each other four times.

Dinner.

A walk.

Coffee.

A Saturday morning farmers market.

Nothing dramatic.

We did not call every day.

We did not text constantly.

At first, that felt unnatural.

Then pleasant.

I began to see what dating Liam might have looked like if we had not merged our lives so quickly the first time.

We still disagreed.

Once about politics.

Once about whether a particular movie was terrible.

Once about him cancelling dinner because Aaron needed help with a medical appointment.

That last one tested me.

He texted three hours before dinner.

Aaron’s ride fell through. I need to take him to PT. Can we reschedule?

Old hurt flared immediately.

Cancelled plans.

That history.

I typed:

Sure.

Then stared at it.

It was not honest.

So I added:

I understand why. I’m still disappointed because I was looking forward to tonight.

My thumb hovered.

Then I sent it.

His response came:

That makes sense. I’m sorry. I should’ve said I know it affects you even if the reason is legitimate.

I stared at the message.

No accusation.

No “what do you want me to do?”

No demand that I prove I supported his brother.

I replied:

Thank you.

Then:

Saturday?

He answered:

Saturday.

Simple.

Each healthy interaction created a strange grief.

This could have existed earlier.

Maybe.

But probably not.

Liam had needed consequences he could not negotiate away.

I had needed separation long enough to hear myself again.

There was no version where we skipped the damage and arrived directly here.

That truth prevented me from romanticizing our progress.

One evening, after coffee, Liam asked, “Are we dating?”

I almost laughed.

“What have you been calling this?”

“Careful exposure therapy.”

I stared.

He smiled.

“Bad joke.”

“Very.”

Then he became serious.

“I don’t want to assume.”

That mattered.

“Yes,” I said.

“We’re dating.”

His face softened.

“Okay.”

“One date at a time.”

“I know.”

“No exclusivity assumptions either.”

That surprised him.

Not angrily.

Just visibly.

“Okay.”

I watched his face.

“You want exclusivity.”

“Yes.”

“I’m not ready to promise that.”

“Are you seeing anyone else?”

“No.”

“Me neither.”

“Then why not agree?”

There.

First reflex.

Reasonable question.

But pressure lived near it.

“Because I need to choose exclusivity when it feels like my choice, not because our current behavior already looks exclusive.”

Liam went quiet.

I braced.

Then he nodded.

“That’s fair.”

“Are you okay with that?”

“No.”

I blinked.

He smiled faintly.

“But okay and fair aren’t the same thing.”

That was new.

“What does not okay mean?”

“It means I’m scared.”

“Of what?”

“That you’ll meet someone else.”

There it was.

No disguised argument.

Fear stated as fear.

I could work with that.

“I might.”

His face tightened.

I hated saying it.

But honesty mattered.

“You might too.”

“I don’t want to.”

“That’s okay.”

“But you do?”

“No.”

He looked confused.

“Then why…”

He stopped himself.

“What?”

“I was about to argue you into agreeing.”

I almost smiled.

“Good catch.”

“I hate this.”

“I know.”

He laughed despite himself.

We ended the conversation there.

No exclusivity.

No crisis.

Two days later, I realized I did not want to see anyone else.

That was not the same as being ready to promise.

I kept that distinction.

The move to Dallas approached.

Boxes appeared in Liam’s apartment.

I did not go there.

Not once.

That boundary remained important.

Our old home held too much gravity.

He offered to let me see it before he left.

I said no.

He accepted.

Three weeks before departure, David hosted dinner.

Smaller group.

Liam and me both invited.

During dessert, Ben asked the obvious question.

“So what are you two doing?”

The table went quiet.

I looked at Liam.

He looked at me.

Old Liam would have answered first.

He did not.

I said, “Dating.”

Ben blinked.

“Seriously?”

“Yes.”

“Like back together?”

“No.”

Liam added, “Dating.”

Ben looked confused.

“That sounds exhausting.”

“It is,” I said.

Everyone laughed.

Then Marcus asked, “Long distance?”

I felt the pressure of the room.

Future.

Definition.

Liam said, “We haven’t decided.”

Perfect.

Because we hadn’t.

No claim.

No hopeful spin.

After dinner, I pulled him aside.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“Not answering for me.”

He looked sad for a second.

“I did that a lot.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

He reached for my hand.

Paused.

I took it.

We stood like that.

Then Liam said, “I’m scared to leave.”

“Me too.”

His fingers tightened slightly.

“What if this disappears?”

I looked at him.

“Then it disappears.”

Pain crossed his face.

I continued.

“We cannot preserve something by trapping it.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“I’m trying.”

That was enough.

We left separately.

The following week, something changed.

Not dramatically.

I began missing him before he had left.

Every date acquired a small shadow.

Last few weeks.

Last local coffee.

Last easy evening.

I hated the countdown.

One night, we sat on a park bench after dinner.

Liam said, “I’m tempted to ask you for a plan.”

I laughed softly.

“Of course you are.”

“I want a schedule.”

“That sounds romantic.”

“Alternate weekends.
