You know what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Jessica said. \u201cI don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ben shifted his weight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was only joking around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica glanced at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked back at Liam.<\/p>\n<p>Liam spread his hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve known each other forever. That\u2019s all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what you said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His smile tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something about the shortened name bothered me less than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe because Jessica did not seem pleased by it either.<\/p>\n<p>Liam tried again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m saying some people stay important no matter how much time passes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence floated into the room.<\/p>\n<p>David stared into his beer.<\/p>\n<p>His wife folded her arms.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah moved closer to me but did not speak.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up an empty plate from the coffee table.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica\u2019s expression had become guarded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t dated in almost four years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have coffee occasionally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are you making it sound like something else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just put your arm around me in front of your partner and told thirty people we have too much history for labels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several guests looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I kept collecting dishes.<\/p>\n<p>Liam noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere. See?\u201d he said, gesturing toward me. \u201cChloe understands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>It was almost impressive.<\/p>\n<p>Even cornered by his own behavior, he tried to use my silence as evidence for his defense.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I met her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand more tonight than I did yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liam frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s that supposed to mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled politely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing you need to worry about right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah coughed into her drink to hide a laugh.<\/p>\n<p>Liam\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica stared between us.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cI should probably explain something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became attentive again.<\/p>\n<p>She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiam and I aren\u2019t close in the way he\u2019s making it sound.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liam interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody said we were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe catch up occasionally. Maybe coffee every few months. A message on birthdays. That\u2019s basically it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She gave me an apologetic look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t even know this was a housewarming party until yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped moving.<\/p>\n<p>Liam\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me your roommate was having people over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word landed cleanly.<\/p>\n<p>Roommate.<\/p>\n<p>I placed the plate on the counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy roommate?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica\u2019s eyes widened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody else spoke.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Liam.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you think?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Her discomfort was obvious now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you two were sharing the apartment temporarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liam stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t exactly what I said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you had someone staying here while you figured things out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A quiet sound came from somewhere behind David. Someone had inhaled sharply.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Liam.<\/p>\n<p>Six months.<\/p>\n<p>Half the rent.<\/p>\n<p>Half the groceries.<\/p>\n<p>My hands in the plumbing.<\/p>\n<p>My money in the furniture.<\/p>\n<p>My evenings repairing, cleaning, cooking, organizing.<\/p>\n<p>Someone staying here.<\/p>\n<p>Liam rubbed the back of his neck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re twisting it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica\u2019s eyebrows rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m repeating it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a casual conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t make the words different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry. I genuinely thought you were his roommate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liam cut in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we stop making this weird?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica ignored him again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re together?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her mouth opened slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you live together?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor six months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica looked at Liam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never told me that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve mentioned Chloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou mentioned Chloe. You never told me Chloe was your partner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t think I needed to provide a relationship r\u00e9sum\u00e9.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not what I\u2019m asking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He threw up his hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what are you asking?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy you invited me into the home you share with your girlfriend after describing her to me like she was practically a tenant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liam\u2019s cheeks darkened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica\u2019s voice remained controlled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen explain what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked around.<\/p>\n<p>Every face in the room had turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>Liam loved attention when he controlled it.<\/p>\n<p>This was different.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re all making this into something ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe, say something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned against the kitchen counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would you like me to say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell her there\u2019s no issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere seems to be an issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I considered the question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Relief flashed across his face.<\/p>\n<p>Then I finished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy issue was settled before she arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah lowered her eyes, hiding another reaction.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica caught the exchange.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened before I arrived?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing you caused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe,\u201d Liam warned.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>There was that tone again.<\/p>\n<p>The one that meant I was approaching the boundary of what he considered acceptable.<\/p>\n<p>Only now the boundary had no power.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica\u2019s gaze moved between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you two argue about me coming?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liam answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I answered at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few guests shifted awkwardly.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica looked at Liam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told her I was coming?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEarlier this week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd she was comfortable with it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him I was uncomfortable with how he handled it,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Liam turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you were fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I said I would behave maturely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Liam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words came out quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica closed her eyes for a second.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly did you tell her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy does this matter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause apparently I walked into an argument without knowing I was part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou weren\u2019t part of an argument.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah finally spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told Chloe that if she couldn\u2019t handle you being here, she could leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liam spun toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was a private conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah\u2019s eyebrows rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInteresting time to start caring about boundaries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A couple of guests looked away to hide smiles.<\/p>\n<p>Liam\u2019s face reddened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t tell her to leave. I said she didn\u2019t have to stay somewhere that made her uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt her own housewarming,\u201d David said.<\/p>\n<p>Liam looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>David had been quiet all evening.<\/p>\n<p>That changed the atmosphere more than Sarah\u2019s intervention had.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David set his beer down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying to understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing to understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica crossed her arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI disagree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liam turned back to her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you acting like I tricked you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI invited you to a party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou invited me to your housewarming without telling me it was your housewarming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I would have asked why your girlfriend wanted your ex there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew she cared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liam scoffed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s an adult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdults can be uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never said they couldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told her the acceptable response before she was allowed to give you her actual one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence landed with startling precision.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Jessica differently.<\/p>\n<p>She had understood in ten minutes what I had spent months trying to articulate.<\/p>\n<p>Liam shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica reached for her purse.<\/p>\n<p>He noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you truth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you invited me here after arguing with your girlfriend about me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t argue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you described her as a roommate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was simplifying things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you apparently wanted me here badly enough to tell her she could leave instead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liam\u2019s voice sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not what I meant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica put the strap of her purse over her shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen maybe you should start saying what you mean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJess, come on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She lifted one hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t appreciate being used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t using you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWeren\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice remained calm, which somehow made the question harsher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou spent the evening touching me, following me around, bringing up our history, and watching Chloe every time you did it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liam went still.<\/p>\n<p>I had noticed the glances.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently Jessica had too.<\/p>\n<p>She continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wanted a reaction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why keep checking whether she was watching?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>Ben stared into his glass.<\/p>\n<p>David\u2019s wife looked openly disgusted now.<\/p>\n<p>Liam laughed again, but there was no confidence left in it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re reading way too much into this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She moved toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>Then she stopped beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t owe me an apology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like I walked into something I should never have been part what\u2019s strange?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spent years wondering why we couldn\u2019t make our relationship work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJessica.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I finally understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She opened the door.<\/p>\n<p>Liam moved instinctively after her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He reached toward her arm.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica stepped backward before he could touch her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One word.<\/p>\n<p>No shouting.<\/p>\n<p>No accusation.<\/p>\n<p>Just a boundary.<\/p>\n<p>And unlike every boundary I had tried to explain to Liam, this one came with an immediate consequence.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica walked into the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>The door closed behind her.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, Liam stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>Then he turned around.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly thirty people remained in the apartment.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>The music continued softly.<\/p>\n<p>Half-melted ice floated in abandoned glasses.<\/p>\n<p>A balloon brushed the ceiling whenever the air conditioner kicked on.<\/p>\n<p>Liam looked from face to face.<\/p>\n<p>Until that moment, I think some part of him had believed the evening would end with everyone admiring how modern and confident he was, while I earned praise for tolerating whatever he chose.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the performance had collapsed without me doing anything.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at David.<\/p>\n<p>David looked away.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Ben.<\/p>\n<p>Ben took a drink.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>She folded her arms.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Liam looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>His voice came out low.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou planned this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost felt sorry for him.<\/p>\n<p>Even now, he needed my behavior to explain his.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew this would happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew something would happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s the difference?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know what you would do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held his gaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI only decided I wasn\u2019t going to rescue you from it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re enjoying this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And that was true.<\/p>\n<p>There was no triumph in me.<\/p>\n<p>Only exhaustion.<\/p>\n<p>I looked around at the apartment\u2014the decorations, the food, the people pretending not to stare.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted you to prove me wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That silenced him.<\/p>\n<p>For one brief second, something vulnerable appeared in his face.<\/p>\n<p>Then pride covered it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis whole thing has been blown completely out of proportion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should probably stop talking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liam stared at his closest friend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeriously?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David set his bottle on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first guest reached for her coat.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>The party had not ended yet.<\/p>\n<p>But everyone in the room understood that the celebration was over.<\/p>\n<p>I reached into my purse and touched the edge of the white envelope I had prepared the night before.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was the only explanation Liam was going to receive from me tonight.<\/p>\n<p>I did not take it out.<\/p>\n<p>Not yet.<\/p>\n<p>First, I wanted him to
