Whenever I asked what was wrong, she gave me the same answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That Tuesday, she did not look fine.<\/p>\n<p>Her backpack hung from one shoulder. She stood beside my car with her head lowered, staring at a crack in the pavement while students streamed around us toward buses and waiting parents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She rubbed her sleeve across her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, can I tell you something without you getting mad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question made me put my keys back into my purse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not mad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou might be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>That was unusual for me. But something about Maya\u2019s posture warned me that one careless question might close whatever door she had finally decided to open.<\/p>\n<p>After several seconds, she whispered, \u201cI stopped telling Dad when it hurts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The traffic noise around us seemed to recede.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen what hurts?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pressed her hand against her stomach.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve been telling your father about this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another shrug.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long is a while?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She finally looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says I\u2019m just doing it for attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was no anger in her voice. That was what frightened me.<\/p>\n<p>If she had rolled her eyes or called her father unfair, I might have interpreted the exchange as another argument between a teenager and a parent. Instead, she sounded tired. Worse, she sounded as though she had accepted his judgment.<\/p>\n<p>I unlocked the car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you calling Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The speed of her relief disturbed me more than her question.<\/p>\n<p>We sat in the car without starting it. Late-afternoon heat had collected inside, and the steering wheel burned beneath my palms. Maya curled toward the passenger door, one knee drawn slightly upward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me exactly what has been happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She watched me cautiously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt hurts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She indicated the right side of her abdomen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConstantly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Sometimes it\u2019s worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know. At night sometimes. After I eat. Sometimes for no reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNausea?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVomiting?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward her completely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many times?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy haven\u2019t you told me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Not guilt.<\/p>\n<p>Confusion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words struck harder than anything she had said before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnew what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She immediately looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You just said you thought I knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI meant about the stomachaches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow would I know if you never told me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She picked at the cuff of her sweatshirt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad said\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Dad say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to push. Every instinct told me to demand the rest of the sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I started the car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her shoulders loosened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd tomorrow,\u201d I continued, \u201cyou\u2019re not going to school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That brought her head around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m taking you to get checked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt might be nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen somebody with medical training can tell us it\u2019s nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad\u2019s going to say\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not asking Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her expression became unreadable.<\/p>\n<p>That evening my husband, David, came home shortly after seven carrying groceries and complaining about traffic.<\/p>\n<p>He kissed my cheek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s Maya?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUpstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHomework?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He placed a carton of milk in the refrigerator and continued talking about a problem at work.<\/p>\n<p>I watched him.<\/p>\n<p>We had been married seventeen years. I knew the small gestures that revealed his moods: the way he loosened his watch when irritated, the way he rubbed his jaw when calculating a response, the way his voice became deliberately casual whenever he wanted a subject to disappear.<\/p>\n<p>I waited until he was putting vegetables into the crisper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya\u2019s stomach has been bothering her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His hand stopped for perhaps half a second.<\/p>\n<p>Then he closed the drawer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The wording caught me.<\/p>\n<p>Not What\u2019s wrong?<\/p>\n<p>Not Since when?<\/p>\n<p>She told you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He straightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe gets stomachaches when she\u2019s stressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s mentioned them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow often?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOff and on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says she\u2019s been vomiting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That produced another tiny pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t seen that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says it\u2019s happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s fifteen. School\u2019s intense. Her friends are dramatic. Everything becomes a crisis at that age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt irritation sharpen inside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPain isn\u2019t a personality trait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t say it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said she\u2019s dramatic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said teenagers are dramatic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I studied him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you tell her she was doing it for attention?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>Only slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that what she told you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He gave a short laugh without humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know how Maya interprets things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow does she interpret things?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiterally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat usually makes interpretation easier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He closed the refrigerator harder than necessary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told her constantly focusing on symptoms can make them feel worse. That\u2019s completely different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you say attention?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t remember my exact wording.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The careful voice.<\/p>\n<p>I had heard it during disagreements about money, vacations, his mother, household repairs. Usually it meant David was trying not to escalate an argument.<\/p>\n<p>That night it sounded different.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she tell you about the pain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBasically what she told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you didn\u2019t think we should take her somewhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt didn\u2019t seem serious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVomiting seems serious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe never told me that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time that evening, I knew one of them was not telling me the whole truth.<\/p>\n<p>I did not yet know which one.<\/p>\n<p>David stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you planning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m taking her to the hospital tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hospital?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s excessive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll frighten her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s already frightened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He rubbed his jaw.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s an urgent-care clinic ten minutes away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d rather have imaging available if they need it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes met mine.<\/p>\n<p>Something passed across his face so quickly I almost missed it.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>Not annoyance.<\/p>\n<p>Not disagreement.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would they need imaging?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know. That\u2019s why I\u2019m taking her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cAt least wait until the weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s Wednesday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what day it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has a chemistry test tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe can take it later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David stared at me for a moment before walking away.<\/p>\n<p>The conversation should have ended there.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, near midnight, I woke and saw light beneath our bedroom door.<\/p>\n<p>David was downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>I found him standing in the kitchen with his phone in his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He startled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCouldn\u2019t sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are you texting?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His screen went dark.<\/p>\n<p>I leaned against the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t want me taking Maya tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you\u2019re overreacting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You gave me reasons. I\u2019m asking why it bothers you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t bother me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we\u2019re done discussing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you take her somewhere tomorrow, don\u2019t make her think something terrible is wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked back at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face relaxed slightly.<\/p>\n<p>Then I added, \u201cBut I\u2019m also not going to tell her she\u2019s imagining pain just because that makes the adults around her more comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning I signed Maya out of school before second period.<\/p>\n<p>David had already left for work.<\/p>\n<p>I did not tell him where we were going.<\/p>\n<p>Maya barely spoke during the drive.<\/p>\n<p>At the hospital, she became quieter still.<\/p>\n<p>A nurse took her vital signs. Another asked about symptoms.
