He expects the granddaughter to clean it up.<\/p>\n<p>My father closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>That note became a seed.<\/p>\n<p>David died.<\/p>\n<p>Alice preserved it.<\/p>\n<p>Martin read it.<\/p>\n<p>Then Martin looked at the trust.<\/p>\n<p>Found me.<\/p>\n<p>Wrote the future-husband letter.<\/p>\n<p>Years later, Patrick entered the plan.<\/p>\n<p>Not because Martin randomly discovered a wealthy beneficiary.<\/p>\n<p>Because a dead analyst had once overheard my grandfather telling a child to do better.<\/p>\n<p>Every person after that interpreted those words according to what they wanted.<\/p>\n<p>Justice.<\/p>\n<p>Money.<\/p>\n<p>Control.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz asked where David\u2019s original notebook was.<\/p>\n<p>Alice hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin had it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father swore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes he still?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen immediately called the investigator questioning Martin.<\/p>\n<p>The notebook had not been among his surrendered materials.<\/p>\n<p>Storage unit?<\/p>\n<p>Not there.<\/p>\n<p>Gray box?<\/p>\n<p>Not there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody knew.<\/p>\n<p>Alice looked toward the mirror again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid received a letter after he was fired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Arthur?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never saw the whole thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid destroyed most of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kept one piece.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alice looked at her attorney.<\/p>\n<p>Then said, \u201cMy house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Police secured it.<\/p>\n<p>Hours later, the fragment arrived as a photographed evidence item.<\/p>\n<p>My grandfather\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Only five lines survived.<\/p>\n<p>David\u2014<\/p>\n<p>You were right to question the valuation.<\/p>\n<p>I was wrong to let the board silence you.<\/p>\n<p>I cannot undo what happened to Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>But I can make certain the children are not the ones who pay for it.<\/p>\n<p>The rest was torn away.<\/p>\n<p>Children.<\/p>\n<p>Plural.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>And perhaps me.<\/p>\n<p>My grandfather had known two younger generations might inherit the damage.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen stared at the fragment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis could explain the trust structure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father created several contingent interests around that period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould Patrick\u2019s father have been included?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alice had spent decades believing her family received nothing.<\/p>\n<p>What if that was not true?<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz asked her whether David ever received money from Arthur after losing his job.<\/p>\n<p>Alice shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about trusts? Insurance?
