Alice\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJenna\u2019s?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it hold?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick looked at marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face collapsed slightly.<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen stood with me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m done for today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick\u2019s voice followed dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe three-million-dollar figure came from a document Martin gave me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat document?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA succession schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt said three million was the amount your grandfather assigned to you in the event the Bell obligation ever resurfaced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>Not a random policy.<\/p>\n<p>A mirrored number.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy copy it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Martin told me that if the Bell claim succeeded, three million was the likely exposure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you insured my life for the amount you expected the family might owe Bell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick\u2019s answer came almost inaudibly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo protect the recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood before anyone explained.<\/p>\n<p>If I died before the trust dispute resolved, Patrick\u2019s entire plan could collapse.<\/p>\n<p>Unless a policy replaced the value.<\/p>\n<p>He had financially prepared for my death without planning to cause it.<\/p>\n<p>The distinction mattered legally.<\/p>\n<p>Emotionally, it barely existed.<\/p>\n<p>I walked out.<\/p>\n<p>In the hallway, my father was waiting.<\/p>\n<p>He had not heard everything.<\/p>\n<p>One look at my face told him enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at
