phone.<\/p>\n<p>Something in him changed.<\/p>\n<p>Not confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Not surprise.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He closed the door behind him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Grandpa confess in the letter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>My father\u2019s shoulders lowered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJenna\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I placed the phone on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo more choosing when I get the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>Then Stephen.<\/p>\n<p>Then me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found the letter after my father died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went completely silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou read it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd hid it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father sat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause what he asked you to do would have changed your inheritance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>Then back at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted you to give part of the trust to Rebecca.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFifteen percent of the assets tied to Bell\u2019s former partnership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Exactly the original draft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Grandpa believed he owed her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLegally?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what I asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe believed he had broken a promise to Thomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca\u2019s face went rigid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat promise?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo protect Rebecca\u2019s share if Thomas agreed not to sue during the restructuring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca looked as though someone had struck her.<\/p>\n<p>Her father had held back.<\/p>\n<p>My grandfather benefited.<\/p>\n<p>Then removed his daughter from the final trust.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked.<\/p>\n<p>My father\u2019s voice was barely audible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause after Thomas died, my father convinced himself the cash settlement was enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd later regretted it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo he wrote to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you give me the letter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I told myself you shouldn\u2019t inherit his guilt along with his money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The explanation was almost tender.<\/p>\n<p>That made it worse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou made the choice for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No defense.<\/p>\n<p>No excuse.<\/p>\n<p>Just yes.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother spent her life believing your family lied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father lowered his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was right about the promise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room felt smaller.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick had built his scheme around a genuine wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Not the wrong he committed against me.<\/p>\n<p>An older one.<\/p>\n<p>A buried promise.<\/p>\n<p>A secret my father preserved.<\/p>\n<p>A grievance Martin fed.<\/p>\n<p>A claim Rebecca funded.<\/p>\n<p>Then Patrick discovered he could profit from all of it.<\/p>\n<p>I finally understood the distribution sheet.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca eight.<\/p>\n<p>Martin five.<\/p>\n<p>Claire three.<\/p>\n<p>Alice twelve.<\/p>\n<p>Denise two.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick forty.<\/p>\n<p>Me thirty.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick had taken an old obligation and redesigned it into a private empire.<\/p>\n<p>One in which he controlled both sides.<\/p>\n<p>The injured Bell family.<\/p>\n<p>And the Hale beneficiary who might eventually pay them.<\/p>\n<p>He had positioned himself as the bridge.<\/p>\n<p>Then made sure every road crossed through him.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Ruiz\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>She listened.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression became grave.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDenise is asking for Jenna.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says the letter isn\u2019t the most important thing in the box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz listened again.<\/p>\n<p>Then stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a second envelope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatrick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom my grandfather?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Ruiz repeated what she had been told.<\/p>\n<p>The envelope was written years before Patrick and I met.<\/p>\n<p>The handwriting belonged to Martin Webb.<\/p>\n<p>And across the front, in block letters, were the
