Credit access. Future trust interests. Vehicle. Insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>My Civic.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick had listed it before he gave it away.<\/p>\n<p>The car had not been spontaneous generosity toward Alice.<\/p>\n<p>It was part of an asset plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen was that spreadsheet last modified?\u201d Stephen asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYesterday morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>Before he gave away the Civic.<\/p>\n<p>Before the transfer.<\/p>\n<p>Before dinner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny notes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRead the headings only.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nina did.<\/p>\n<p>CURRENT.<\/p>\n<p>PENDING.<\/p>\n<p>CONTROLLED.<\/p>\n<p>EXPOSED.<\/p>\n<p>The word hung in the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExposed?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was under it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keyboard sounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVehicle title.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNote says: nonentity asset; visible family origin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>He understood before I did.<\/p>\n<p>The car came from him.<\/p>\n<p>It was titled only to me.<\/p>\n<p>It was outside Patrick\u2019s company.<\/p>\n<p>Outside the forged power structure.<\/p>\n<p>And its ownership was obvious.<\/p>\n<p>The car was the piece he could not quietly absorb.<\/p>\n<p>So he gave it away.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe to establish control.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe to remove it.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe because he thought I would surrender.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else is marked exposed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nina hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne document.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat document?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She read the filename.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOriginal Prenuptial Agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Stephen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked back at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had a prenup?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick had complained about it before the wedding.<\/p>\n<p>My father insisted.<\/p>\n<p>I had hated the entire conversation.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, Patrick signed after saying money was the least important thing between us.<\/p>\n<p>I had almost forgotten the document existed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d Stephen asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father\u2019s lawyer had a copy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t draft it,\u201d Stephen said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Bennett Cole did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCole retired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen immediately reached for his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did the agreement say about inherited assets?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeparate property,\u201d my father answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd marital property transfers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth signatures. Independent consent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat document could destroy Patrick\u2019s claim that Hale-WM Holdings was a normal marital planning vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy mark it exposed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he didn\u2019t control it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen called Cole\u2019s former firm.<\/p>\n<p>No answer at first.<\/p>\n<p>Then reception.<\/p>\n<p>He gave his name, requested archived files, and waited.<\/p>\n<p>When he finally spoke again, his voice became careful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean the file was requested?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmail me the request immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone requested your original prenup archive three weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatrick?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe request was submitted in your name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid they send it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My shoulders dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the firm requires in-person identity confirmation for archived originals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Then Stephen added:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut someone came in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The relief vanished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe presented identification with your name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morgan whispered, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she get the file?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. The clerk noticed the birth date on the ID didn\u2019t match the archive record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid they keep the ID?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecurity cameras?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen\u2019s expression sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we get the footage?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m asking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father looked toward the printed photograph of Alice.<\/p>\n<p>I knew what he was thinking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d Morgan asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlice is twenty-seven years older than me.
