He said his mother handled some family investments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alice.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Not a passive beneficiary.<\/p>\n<p>Present before our marriage.<\/p>\n<p>Present during the planning.<\/p>\n<p>Present in the company.<\/p>\n<p>Present when I unknowingly signed documents at her kitchen counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she know about me then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer cut cleanly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew I was Richard Hale\u2019s daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew about the estate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew Patrick was asking whether I was married.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>The picture of Alice telling me yesterday that Patrick loved me suddenly became unbearable.<\/p>\n<p>She had watched him pursue me from the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe encouraged it.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe planned beside him.<\/p>\n<p>My father stood by the window, rigid.<\/p>\n<p>For once, I did not know which betrayal hurt more.<\/p>\n<p>His secrecy.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick\u2019s calculation.<\/p>\n<p>Alice\u2019s involvement.<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s greed.<\/p>\n<p>All of them had treated information about my life as currency.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen ended the call only after Martin promised to send records.<\/p>\n<p>Then the room fell quiet.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou hired someone to follow Patrick before we married.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid the investigator find this meeting?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you still never told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought the photograph proved Patrick was pursuing business contacts, not you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked Martin whether I was married.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew his mother was at that meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew they discussed family assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd when I told you I was engaged, you smiled and said you were happy for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face broke then.<\/p>\n<p>Not dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>A slight collapse around the eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was afraid if I told you I had investigated him, you would hear only that I didn\u2019t trust your judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo instead you made sure I had none of the information required to use my judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>This time it was Stephen\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>He answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed as he listened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSend it now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>He ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the credit lines in Jenna\u2019s name was used yesterday afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter dinner?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeventy-five thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father swore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did it go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Hale-WM Holdings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company Patrick had created using my name.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen\u2019s phone chimed.<\/p>\n<p>He opened the incoming document.<\/p>\n<p>Then he went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned the screen toward me.<\/p>\n<p>The transfer authorization carried my signature.<\/p>\n<p>Below it was a timestamp.<\/p>\n<p>3:47 p.m. yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>At 3:47 p.m., I had been at work.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick had already taken my car.<\/p>\n<p>Already moved money in my name.<\/p>\n<p>Already planned to sit across from my father at dinner as though nothing had happened.<\/p>\n<p>And for the first time, I understood the car had never been the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>It was simply the first theft he committed openly enough for someone else to see.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feeleverystory.online\/?p=11590\">Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Seventy-Five-Thousand-Dollar Transfer Led to a Hidden Account, and Patrick\u2019s Next Move Proved He Knew We Were Closing In<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a lie.\u201d My father\u2019s voice cut through the room.
