My mother lowered her eyes. Morgan folded her arms. Aunt Lauren stared openly at him.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody volunteered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re turning a family disagreement into a legal matter,\u201d Patrick said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I answered.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did that when you started making decisions with things that weren\u2019t yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>At home, I knew what would have followed: a closed door, an accusation, a long conversation that ended with me apologizing for the tone in which I had objected to being mistreated.<\/p>\n<p>Here, he had an audience.<\/p>\n<p>He hated audiences he could not control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve been complaining about me to them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously you have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe hasn\u2019t,\u201d my father said. \u201cThat is part of the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>My father\u2019s voice remained level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has spent years doing the opposite.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pressure built behind my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I hated that he was right.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick snatched his jacket from the chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this is what tonight has become, I\u2019m leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore you do,\u201d my father said, \u201cunderstand something. Do not move money. Do not destroy paperwork. Do not use Jenna\u2019s signature. Do not access any account belonging to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick froze with one arm halfway into his jacket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you accusing me of?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t accused you of anything beyond what you admitted yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re threatening me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m giving you an opportunity not to make your situation worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick turned to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is going to cost you, Jenna.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>That made it worse.<\/p>\n<p>My father took one step toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anything disappears before Stephen reviews it, the cost will not be hers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick\u2019s eyes flickered.<\/p>\n<p>My father noticed.<\/p>\n<p>So did I.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat list?\u201d Patrick asked suddenly.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody had mentioned a list.<\/p>\n<p>My father\u2019s gaze sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one Jenna is going to make tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick left without another word.<\/p>\n<p>The front door slammed.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, all we heard was the faint vibration of crystal from the force of it.<\/p>\n<p>My mother came toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, Jenna.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to accept the comfort.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, years of swallowed resentment reached my mouth first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew something was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew you two had difficulties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou kept telling me marriage required patience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought I was helping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the painful part.<\/p>\n<p>She had not wanted me harmed. She had wanted the unpleasant evidence to fit inside a reassuring explanation.<\/p>\n<p>My father disappeared into the study and returned carrying a yellow legal pad.<\/p>\n<p>He placed it in front of me with a pen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStart writing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything involving money that ever made you uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the blank paper.<\/p>\n<p>Memories came so quickly that I could not choose which one deserved to be first.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick\u2019s extra credit card.<\/p>\n<p>The expensive watch Alice suddenly owned after Patrick told me we had to postpone replacing our refrigerator.<\/p>\n<p>Payments toward his brother\u2019s SUV.<\/p>\n<p>Furniture charged to my account that somehow ended up at Alice\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p>A necklace missing from my jewelry box.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick had insisted I must have misplaced it.<\/p>\n<p>Two months later he admitted he had sold it because one of his business ventures needed \u201ctemporary liquidity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had cried.<\/p>\n<p>He had accused me of caring more about jewelry than our future.<\/p>\n<p>I wrote it down.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered the scanned signature.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick had once asked me to sign a document for an insurance matter. Later, while using our home computer, I found a high-resolution image of my signature saved in a folder bearing an unrelated name.<\/p>\n<p>When I confronted him, he said he used it for routine paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>I wrote that down too.<\/p>\n<p>The page filled.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>Morgan sat beside me without speaking.<\/p>\n<p>Jason brought his laptop from the study and began organizing dates as I remembered them.<\/p>\n<p>My mother made coffee nobody drank.<\/p>\n<p>Uncle Arthur asked occasional questions that opened entire corridors of memory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he ever borrow against anything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he know your passwords?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he receive your mail?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he have access to tax documents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes.<\/p>\n<p>Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Each answer made the room colder.<\/p>\n<p>When Stephen Lawson arrived shortly after eleven-thirty, he carried a leather briefcase and wore the expression of a man who had been pulled from bed but intended to make the interruption somebody else\u2019s problem.<\/p>\n<p>He read my notes first.<\/p>\n<p>Then he asked me to explain the car.<\/p>\n<p>He did not interrupt.<\/p>\n<p>When I finished, he tapped the page containing the scanned signature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis concerns me more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause giving away a car without permission is obvious misconduct. A reusable image of your signature creates opportunities that may not be obvious at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He asked whether Patrick knew my Social Security number.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My banking information?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Insurance details?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Access to our tax returns?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen closed his pen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should not return to your apartment alone tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward my father.<\/p>\n<p>He did not say I told you so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe stays here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow we review your credit, banking, property records, insurance, and any authorization documents that might exist. Tonight you change passwords from a device Patrick has never used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the next hour, Morgan sat beside me while I changed password after password.<\/p>\n<p>Banking.<\/p>\n<p>Email.<\/p>\n<p>Cloud storage.<\/p>\n<p>Insurance.<\/p>\n<p>Credit cards.<\/p>\n<p>Every changed credential felt absurdly small, yet each one closed a door Patrick had assumed would remain open forever.<\/p>\n<p>I finally went upstairs after one.<\/p>\n<p>My old bedroom had become a guest room years ago, but my mother still kept a pair of pajamas in the dresser that nearly fit me.<\/p>\n<p>I washed my face.<\/p>\n<p>The woman in the mirror looked exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing dramatic had happened to her face. No bruise. No cut.
