stable enough to answer questions, had identified Victor independently.

That settled it.

Victor Cole was alive.

He had been at the gas station hours before Martin was attacked.

And somehow he had become tangled in Vanessa and Grant’s attempt to seize Dad’s property.

“What did Martin tell them?” I asked.

Detective Kim put the sheriff on speaker.

Martin’s version began months earlier.

Vanessa contacted him after finding Mom’s notebook.

At first, Martin wanted nothing to do with the family.

Then she mentioned Raymond Shaw.

That changed everything.

Martin agreed to meet.

“He told her Raymond ruined him,” the sheriff year.”

Dad looked at the phone.

“Why?”

“Money.”

Of course.

Victor apparently believed the old ledger still existed.

He suspected Martin knew where Clara hid it.

Martin denied knowing.

Victor did not believe him.

Then Vanessa called.

Dad looked sick.

“She connected them.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa thought she had found a disgraced former employee who could expose secrets Dad had hidden.

Instead, she created a path directly from Victor back into Dad’s life.

“What did Victor want from her?” I asked.

“The house initially.”

Dad frowned.

“Why my house?”

The answer was stranger than any of us expected.

Because Victor believed something was hidden there.

Not money.

Records.

Raymond had supposedly stored documents on Dad’s property decades earlier.

Victor never knew where.

When Vanessa complained about being cut out of the estate, Martin mentioned that Victor might help.

“How generous,” Dad said.

Martin arranged a meeting.

Victor never introduced himself as Dad’s brother.

Vanessa knew him as Vince Carter.

Dad laughed once.

“V.C.”

The initials.

Not Victor Cole on modern paperwork.

Vince Carter.

Another layer.

Grant entered the scheme later.

Richard Bell later still.

Victor told Vanessa that Dad’s old documents could prove she had rights to assets being concealed from her.

He encouraged her to establish Dad’s mental decline.

He helped identify which records to retrieve.

He knew which boxes might contain signatures.

Which files held tax information.

Which drawers contained old deeds.

This was not guidance from a stranger.

It was reconnaissance from someone who knew the architecture of Dad’s life.

“Did Vanessa know who he really was?” I asked.

“No indication.”

Dad closed his eyes.

“So she thought she was using him.”

Harold nodded.

“And he was using her.”

The sheriff continued.

Martin claimed the fraudulent property transfer was Victor’s idea.

Not primarily to sell the house.

To gain legal access.

“If Vanessa controlled the property,” Harold said slowly, “Victor could enter without trespassing accusations.”

“And search,” I added.

Dad looked toward the ledger.

“For whatever Raymond hid.”

That meant our earlier interpretation had been incomplete.

Vanessa wanted the house for money.

Victor wanted the house for history.

Grant wanted out of debt.

Richard wanted fees or something worse.

Martin wanted leverage.

Everyone was pursuing a different thing through the same fraud.

That was why the scheme had felt so chaotic.

It was.

“What happened last night?” Dad asked.

Martin had grown frightened.

Victor told him the trust would be recorded in the morning.

The property transfer had to be filed first.

Martin warned Grant.

Grant met him at the gas station.

Victor watched.

Afterward Martin drove to the storage unit because Victor demanded the old company records.

“Why would Martin go alone?” I asked.

“He says he thought cooperation would end it.”

Dad looked disgusted.

“Twenty years and he still believes that.”

At the storage unit, Victor searched the records.

He demanded the ledger.

Martin insisted Clara had hidden it.

Victor attacked him.

Not because Martin refused to surrender it.

Because Martin admitted Vanessa had found Clara’s notebook.

That notebook apparently contained enough clues to point toward the safe-deposit box.

My skin prickled.

“Does Victor know about Box 417?”

The sheriff answered carefully.

“Martin says no.”

“Does he know I have the key?”

“Martin didn’t.”

Dad looked at the bank box.

“But he knows Clara left something with Natalie.”

I remembered Martin’s message from the hospital.

Tell Natalie her mother left the last proof with her.

If Martin figured it out, Victor could too.

Detective Kim immediately contacted bank security.

The ledger and contents would remain in law-enforcement custody rather than return to the box.

That should have relieved me.

It didn’t.

Dad was staring at the gas-station image again.

“What?” I asked.

He pointed to something near Victor’s hand.

A cane?

No.

A folded umbrella.

“He hates umbrellas.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“Victor never carried one.”

Harold looked puzzled.

“Edward, people change.”

“No.”

Dad leaned closer.

“He broke two fingers on his right hand in a factory accident.”

“So?”

“So he carried things in his left.”

The umbrella was in the right.

Detective Kim zoomed again.

Dad looked unsettled.

“Maybe I’m wrong.”

But he didn’t believe it.

Harold asked, “Could this not be Victor?”

Dad studied the posture.

“The shoulder is right.”

“Could someone imitate that?”

“Why would they?”

No one answered.

Then I noticed the timestamp.

11:14 p.m.

Grant said he met Martin around eleven.

That fit.

Detective Kim pulled another image.

The man turned slightly.

Still not enough facial detail.

Then a third.

A vehicle entered the frame behind him.

Dark sedan.

Dad leaned forward.

“That car.”

“What?”

“I’ve seen it.”

“Where?”

“Outside the grocery store.”

The one that made him suspect someone had been watching.

“License plate?” Harold asked.

Unreadable.

But the shape was clear.

An older luxury sedan.

Detective Kim forwarded the images for enhancement.

Dad kept staring.

Something bothered him beyond the hand.

Then he pointed again.

“The watch.”

I almost laughed from tension.

“What about it?”

“Victor never wore one.”

“Dad.”

“I gave him one for his thirtieth birthday. He sold it the next day.”

“That was decades ago.”

“I know.”

He sat back.

“Maybe none of this matters.”

But later, when the sheriff sent a photograph of Victor from an old fraud arrest twelve years earlier, Dad looked even more troubled.

The face was undeniably similar to the gas-station man.

But not exact.

Age could explain that.

Lighting could explain that.

Weight change.

Gray hair.

Yet something remained off.

Harold compared the images.

“I see what you mean.”

Detective Kim did too.

“What?”

“The ears.”

I looked.

The arrest photograph showed Victor’s left ear slightly folded along the upper edge.

The gas-station man’s ear looked normal.

We needed better images.

Dad rubbed his forehead.

“What if Martin is lying?”

“He identified him.”

“What if he wants us looking for Victor?”

The room went quiet.

That possibility changed everything again.

Martin had lied before.

Manipulated records.

Protected himself.

Worked with Raymond.

Then supposedly worked with Victor.

His injury made him a victim in the present.

It did not make him honest about the past.

“Why would he invent Victor?” I asked.

Dad looked at the ledger.

“To keep us from asking about someone else.”

Harold nodded slowly.

“Raymond?”

“Raymond is dead.”

“So is Elliot.”

Dad looked at Mom’s note.

“She asked who Raymond was protecting.”

I felt a chill.

Not working with.

Protecting.

The wording mattered.

“Someone above Raymond?”

Dad shook his head.

“Or someone he loved.”

That possibility felt worse.

We left the bank after transferring the evidence into police custody.

Detective Kim arranged for officers to remain near my apartment overnight.

Dad insisted we return home.

He wanted to confront Vanessa with what we had learned.

Harold advised waiting.

Dad refused.

“For once, I’m done letting everyone else hold pieces of my family history.”

The drive back took nearly four hours.

Darkness had fallen by the time we reached Dad’s town.

The sheriff met us at the house.

Vanessa sat at the dining-room table.

Grant was gone.

“Where is he?” I asked.

Vanessa looked exhausted.

“The sheriff let him go after questioning.”

Dad frowned.

“You stayed?”

She looked at him.

“I didn’t know where else to go.”

Dad took off his coat.

For one second, they looked like any father and daughter after a terrible day.

Then he placed the photograph of Victor’s arrest on the table.

“Do you know this man?”

Vanessa stared.

“No.”

Dad watched her carefully.

I believed her.

He placed the gas-station image beside it.

“This one?”

Her face changed.

“Yes.”

“Who is he?”

“Vince.”

Dad sat down.

“What did he tell you his last name
