The door lock was examined for tool marks.<\/p>\n<p>There were none.<\/p>\n<p>Whoever had entered possessed access.<\/p>\n<p>Nora Bell stood in the hallway looking stricken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly Thomas and I had keys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny duplicates?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot officially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho handled his estate?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis nephew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChristopher Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeattle, I think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike wrote it down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he ever visit this room?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel leaned against the wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould Dad have gotten a key from Thomas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nora shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas stopped trusting Gerald.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean Gerald couldn\u2019t take one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nothing meant that anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Pike finally allowed Gabriel and Rachel to open Eleanor\u2019s envelope once it had been documented.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were four pages and a small photograph.<\/p>\n<p>The photograph showed Gabriel and Rachel as children on the dock at the lake house.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor had written on the back:<\/p>\n<p>For when you need to remember who you were before fear taught you to be quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel pressed the image flat with both hands.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked away.<\/p>\n<p>The letter itself was less emotional than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor seemed to have written it quickly.<\/p>\n<p>She explained that the red ledger cataloged transactions connected to Calder Holdings, Northbridge Advisory, and three other entities.<\/p>\n<p>Next to each person\u2019s name she had used symbols.<\/p>\n<p>Circle: knowingly involved.<\/p>\n<p>Square: signature or identity used without consent.<\/p>\n<p>Triangle: uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel whispered, \u201cShe built her own code.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike looked over his shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes she include a key?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That changed the meaning of everything.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn\u2019s name appearing in the ledger no longer implied participation.<\/p>\n<p>Neither did Gabriel\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Neither did Rachel\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>The ledger was not simply a list of suspects.<\/p>\n<p>It was Eleanor\u2019s attempt to separate guilt from manipulation.<\/p>\n<p>I understood why Gerald would want it gone.<\/p>\n<p>The financial records could show money moved.<\/p>\n<p>The ledger could show who Eleanor believed had actually moved it.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel continued reading.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor wrote that Gerald preferred using names of family members because investigators, spouses, business partners, and relatives would spend energy accusing one another.<\/p>\n<p>Divide suspicion.<\/p>\n<p>Control the story.<\/p>\n<p>It was the corporate version of what he had tried in my bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>Pike asked, \u201cDoes she identify Martin Voss?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel scanned the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says Martin is a circle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnowingly involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas Vale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTriangle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSquare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn had been used.<\/p>\n<p>At least according to Eleanor\u2019s understanding when she wrote the letter.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel called her immediately.<\/p>\n<p>When she heard, Evelyn cried.<\/p>\n<p>Not loudly.<\/p>\n<p>Just one ragged exhale followed by silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted her to know I was sorry,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew Dad used you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not the same as forgiving me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again, nobody offered comfort where certainty did not exist.<\/p>\n<p>Pike asked about other names.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel read several.<\/p>\n<p>Most meant nothing to us.<\/p>\n<p>Then he stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He handed the page to Pike.<\/p>\n<p>One name had been underlined twice.<\/p>\n<p>CHRISTOPHER VALE.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Vale\u2019s nephew.<\/p>\n<p>Symbol: triangle.<\/p>\n<p>Nora stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChristopher?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s in information security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answered one question immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Cloning an old phone identifier required technical knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould he know how?\u201d Gabriel asked.<\/p>\n<p>Nora hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould he know about Thomas\u2019s archive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike stepped away to make a call.<\/p>\n<p>Ten minutes later he returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChristopher Vale isn\u2019t in Seattle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis employer says he resigned six months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForwarding address?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamily?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone listed nearby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nora sat down on a storage box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe adored Thomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould he have known Eleanor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe met her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow well?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel held up the letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Mom put him in the ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody could answer.<\/p>\n<p>Pike ordered a broader search for Christopher.<\/p>\n<p>Then Gabriel noticed something else in Eleanor\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe references page forty-seven.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf the ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel read aloud.<\/p>\n<p>If I am wrong about Christopher, page 47 will prove it.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForty-seven again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The storage unit.<\/p>\n<p>Now the ledger page.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe coincidence.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Eleanor liked numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe forty-seven had become an intentional reference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny explanation?\u201d Pike asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The red ledger itself remained missing.<\/p>\n<p>But Pike\u2019s forensic team had recovered photographs Mercer took on his phone before being attacked.<\/p>\n<p>He had photographed several open pages.<\/p>\n<p>One through nine.<\/p>\n<p>Then thirty-two.<\/p>\n<p>Then forty-six.<\/p>\n<p>No forty-seven.<\/p>\n<p>Pike enlarged the image of page forty-six.<\/p>\n<p>Names. Amounts. Dates.<\/p>\n<p>Symbols.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom, Eleanor had written:<\/p>\n<p>C.V. says he can duplicate access without alerts.<\/p>\n<p>C.V.<\/p>\n<p>Christopher Vale.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuplicate access to what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>Pike scrolled to another image.<\/p>\n<p>Page forty-six continued with a line:<\/p>\n<p>G trusts systems more than people because systems do not argue.<\/p>\n<p>I felt a chill.<\/p>\n<p>Christopher had technological access.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald trusted systems.<\/p>\n<p>The old phone had been cloned.<\/p>\n<p>Security codes had been compromised.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs of me had been taken around Lawson property.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if Christopher installed the surveillance?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Pike looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Gerald?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney. Family pressure. Something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel\u2019s eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr Mom asked him to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone turned.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed at the line.<\/p>\n<p>C.V. says he can duplicate access without alerts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like Christopher helping her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel said, \u201cSo the triangle fits. She wasn\u2019t sure which side he was on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Exactly.<\/p>\n<p>Someone capable of helping Eleanor bypass Gerald\u2019s systems could also later help Gerald watch us.<\/p>\n<p>Or the same person could have switched sides.<\/p>\n<p>Or never chosen one.<\/p>\n<p>Pike\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>This time the caller was one of his officers.<\/p>\n<p>He listened.<\/p>\n<p>Then asked, \u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSend it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d Gabriel asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found Christopher\u2019s vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo miles from the lake house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbandoned since early morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny blood?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSigns of struggle?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike\u2019s phone buzzed with an image.<\/p>\n<p>He turned it toward us.<\/p>\n<p>The inside of a dark sedan.<\/p>\n<p>On the passenger seat was a red leather ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cThey found it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the cover.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He enlarged the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>The book was hollow.<\/p>\n<p>Pages cut out from the binding.<\/p>\n<p>Only fragments remained.<\/p>\n<p>Whoever had the real pages had discarded the shell.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel cursed.<\/p>\n<p>Pike looked at the next photo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something in the glove compartment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA motel key card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The motel sat near the interstate.<\/p>\n<p>Police arrived before we did.<\/p>\n<p>Pike insisted we remain at the station.<\/p>\n<p>This time nobody argued.<\/p>\n<p>An hour later he returned with photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Room 214.<\/p>\n<p>Not Thomas Vale\u2019s archive room.<\/p>\n<p>The motel room number was also 214.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat can\u2019t be accidental.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike agreed.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the motel room, police found clothing, two laptops, several prepaid phones, and printed photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Most photographs were of Gerald.<\/p>\n<p>Entering restaurants.<\/p>\n<p>Leaving company offices.<\/p>\n<p>Meeting Martin Voss.<\/p>\n<p>Meeting unfamiliar people.<\/p>\n<p>Christopher had been watching him.<\/p>\n<p>Then Pike placed one final photograph on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald standing in a parking garage.<\/p>\n<p>Beside him was a man I recognized immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Voss.<\/p>\n<p>Between them stood a third person.<\/p>\n<p>A woman.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>He knew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad\u2019s assistant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarianne Cole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered her.<\/p>\n<p>Quiet. Efficient. Always outside Gerald\u2019s office with a tablet in her hand.<\/p>\n<p>Pike asked, \u201cHow long has she worked for him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFifteen years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared at the photo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe worked for him when Mom died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike placed another image beside it.<\/p>\n<p>Marianne entering the Calder warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>Date stamped one day before Eleanor\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel whispered, \u201cShe was involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike corrected him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he showed us the back of the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Christopher had written:<\/p>\n<p>M.C. knows who followed E.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cMarianne knows who followed Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd we can\u2019t find her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald was missing.<\/p>\n<p>Christopher was missing.<\/p>\n<p>Marianne was missing.<\/p>\n<p>The red ledger pages were missing.<\/p>\n<p>But for the first time, the people surrounding Eleanor during her final week were no longer shadows.<\/p>\n<p>They had names.<\/p>\n<p>Pike\u2019s phone rang again.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the number.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Gabriel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>Pike answered and placed the call on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDetective Pike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald\u2019s voice came through calm and clear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand you\u2019ve been bothering my family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel shut his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Pike said, \u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have an active warrant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m aware.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTurn yourself in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to speak to Chloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every face turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Pike shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s there. I know she is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>How?<\/p>\n<p>Was he guessing?<\/p>\n<p>Or still watching?<\/p>\n<p>Pike said, \u201cYou speak to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald laughed softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You are temporary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone buzzed on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Another unknown message.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>A live photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Us inside the station conference room.<\/p>\n<p>Taken through the narrow glass panel in the door.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stood so fast her chair fell backward.<\/p>\n<p>Pike spun toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>Officers rushed outside.<\/p>\n<p>No one was there.<\/p>\n<p>The corridor was empty.<\/p>\n<p>The message beneath the photograph contained five words.<\/p>\n<p>LOOK AT PAGE FORTY-SEVEN, CHLOE.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald\u2019s voice remained on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, very quietly:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk Gabriel why his mother wrote your name six years before she ever met you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call ended.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feeleverystory.online\/?p=10453\">Click here to continue reading: PART 13: Gerald Claimed Eleanor Had Written My Name Six Years Ago, and Page Forty-Seven Explained the Lie Behind That Impossible Message<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pike shut down the archive immediately.
