She took in the scene without visible surprise: Gabriel pinning the stranger beside the bed, Gerald standing rigid near the hallway, Rachel pale against the wall, and me clutching my phone as if it were the only solid thing left in the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody stay where you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel released the man immediately and stepped backward with both hands raised. The stranger rolled onto his side, coughing mango juice from his nose. Gerald opened his mouth, but the officer pointed at him before he could speak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two more officers entered. Within seconds, the bedroom changed from Gerald\u2019s carefully staged trap into something he no longer controlled. One officer separated Gabriel and the stranger. Another photographed the packet on the carpet without touching it. The woman who had entered first asked who owned the house.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald answered.<\/p>\n<p>Then she asked who had called.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel raised his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd who believes they were drugged?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel and I answered at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>The officer\u2019s expression sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>She called for paramedics.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald objected. \u201cMy daughter is tired. That\u2019s all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel turned toward him. \u201cStop speaking for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was a small sentence, but I watched it hit him harder than Gabriel\u2019s accusation had.<\/p>\n<p>The stranger sat on the carpet with his wrists cuffed in front of him. He looked less dangerous now that police were surrounding him. He was maybe forty-five, with thinning hair, a badly shaved jaw, and rain-darkened trousers. Whatever fantasy of control Gerald had purchased from him had vanished. He kept glancing toward the officers as though cooperation were the only raft left floating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s your name?\u201d one officer asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin Voss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald\u2019s head snapped toward him.<\/p>\n<p>I noticed.<\/p>\n<p>So did Gabriel.<\/p>\n<p>The officer asked Martin if he knew Gerald.<\/p>\n<p>Martin laughed without humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently he doesn\u2019t know me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Voss,\u201d the officer continued, \u201cwhy are you in this bedroom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin glanced toward Gerald again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe paid me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive thousand upfront. Five after.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>The officer waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake it look bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe specific.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin rubbed his wrists against the cuffs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was supposed to be in the bed. She was supposed to be passed out. He said I should loosen my shirt, move her clothes around, make it look like\u2026\u201d He looked at me and then away. \u201cLike we\u2019d been together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel\u2019s face became hard.<\/p>\n<p>The officer asked, \u201cWere you instructed to touch her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhotograph her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe. He said there\u2019d be pictures, but I didn\u2019t know whether I was taking them or somebody else was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald finally spoke. \u201cHe\u2019s lying because he was caught trespassing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin twisted around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou gave me the side-door code.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent again.<\/p>\n<p>The officer wrote something down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat code?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin recited six digits.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>It was correct.<\/p>\n<p>The code had been changed only three months earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked at Gerald. \u201cHow did he know that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald replied, \u201cSomeone could have told him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou expect us to believe a stranger guessed his way into your house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>The paramedics arrived before he answered. They examined Rachel first. Her blood pressure was low, her pupils slightly sluggish, and she admitted taking two swallows from the bottle she had stolen from my suitcase.<\/p>\n<p>One paramedic turned sharply toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still have the bottle?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t touch it again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I showed him where it was hidden.<\/p>\n<p>An officer retrieved it using gloves and sealed it inside an evidence bag.<\/p>\n<p>When the paramedic asked whether I had swallowed any of the drink, I told him about pretending to drink and spitting most of it into my sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou may have absorbed some,\u201d he said. \u201cWe need to check both of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald objected again.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody listened.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since I had married into the Lawson family, Gerald could speak and the room simply continued without him.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel was helped downstairs. I followed, but Gabriel caught my hand before I reached the staircase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>There were a hundred things I wanted him to say.<\/p>\n<p>Instead he looked at me with a kind of stunned shame.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not ask what he meant.<\/p>\n<p>For doubting me.<\/p>\n<p>For leaving me alone here.<\/p>\n<p>For allowing his father\u2019s version of me to settle into the marriage like dust.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe all of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t the time,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen help them preserve everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>I went downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>The ambulance crew wanted Rachel transported to the hospital because they could not identify what she had ingested. She resisted until I told her I was going too. Then she agreed.<\/p>\n<p>As the paramedic helped her toward the front door, Rachel looked back at the staircase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe envelope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>The one with her name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI left it upstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d She swallowed. \u201cI put it in my pocket.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She touched the front of her sweatshirt.<\/p>\n<p>It was empty.<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the study. Then upstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked toward Gerald, who was answering questions across the foyer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before I could press her, the paramedic guided us outside.<\/p>\n<p>Rain had weakened to a fine mist. The ambulance lights washed the driveway in pulses of red. Neighbors\u2019 porch lights were coming on beyond the hedges, but nobody approached.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the ambulance, Rachel sat on the bench opposite me with a blanket around her shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to tell me what was in your envelope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at her knees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t powder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA photograph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s mother, Eleanor Lawson, had died six years before Gabriel and I met.<\/p>\n<p>I had seen dozens of family pictures of her. Formal charity events. Vacations. Christmas mornings. Eleanor always looked elegant, contained, and slightly distant from whoever stood beside her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of photograph?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel lifted her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was standing outside a storage building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s fingers tightened around the blanket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a date written on the back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat date?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe week before she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor\u2019s death had always been described as sudden but uncomplicated. A car accident on a wet country road. Gabriel rarely discussed it. Rachel discussed it even less.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Gerald keep that in an envelope with your name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s the envelope now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought I had it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer frightened her more than the drug.<\/p>\n<p>At the hospital, blood was drawn from both of us. A nurse took my robe because I had wiped the juice on the sleeve. I changed into hospital scrubs while Rachel was placed on a monitored bed nearby.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel arrived forty minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald did not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is he?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice are still at the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Martin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaken in for questioning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel closed the curtain behind him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He placed a clear evidence-style document sleeve on the rolling table.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a folded sheet of paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my envelope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel sat straighter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou opened it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel\u2019s envelope had contained no powder.<\/p>\n<p>No photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Only instructions written in Gerald\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel had photographed them before turning the original over to police.<\/p>\n<p>The page listed a sequence of times.<\/p>\n<p>12:00 \u2014 Chloe drinks.<\/p>\n<p>12:40 \u2014 M.V. enters.<\/p>\n<p>1:05 \u2014 call G.<\/p>\n<p>1:25 \u2014 bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>1:30 \u2014 witnesses.<\/p>\n<p>I read the last word twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWitnesses?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin said he thought there would be pictures. Dad apparently wanted more than pictures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cWho were the witnesses?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel\u2019s eyes moved toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pulled out his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was another line at the bottom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He enlarged the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Underneath the schedule, Gerald had written:<\/p>\n<p>If G hesitates, use Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Gabriel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho\u2019s Evelyn?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAunt Evelyn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald\u2019s younger sister.<\/p>\n<p>I had met her only twice. Both times she had treated me with a cool politeness that felt rehearsed.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad called her tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe officers let me check his recent calls while they were standing there. He called Evelyn at 11:41. Then again after midnight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would she help him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel rubbed both hands over his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of the instruction.<\/p>\n<p>If G hesitates, use Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>Not ask Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>Use her.<\/p>\n<p>That meant Evelyn possessed something Gerald believed could influence Gabriel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you call her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel leaned back slowly.<\/p>\n<p>A monitor beeped beside her.<\/p>\n<p>Then Gabriel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe police found another phone in Dad\u2019s study.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA burner?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooks like it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was on it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey haven\u2019t searched it yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what you were going to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pause stretched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGabriel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He finally met my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a contact saved under your name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut not my number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned his phone around.<\/p>\n<p>On the screen was a photograph he had taken before police seized the device.<\/p>\n<p>A contact page.<\/p>\n<p>CHLOE.<\/p>\n<p>Underneath it was a number I did not recognize.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel whispered, \u201cWho does it belong to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then his phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>All three of us stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>He answered on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a moment there was only static.<\/p>\n<p>Then a woman said, \u201cGabriel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAunt Evelyn?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel sat upright.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn sounded breathless.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to leave the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake Rachel and Chloe and go somewhere Gerald doesn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn was silent for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cBecause what happened tonight was not Gerald\u2019s first attempt to stage a betrayal inside that house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s hand flew to her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel whispered, \u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn answered so quietly I almost missed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk him what he did to your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feeleverystory.online\/?p=10446\">Click here to continue reading: PART 6: Aunt Evelyn Told Us Gerald Had Used the Same Trap Years Earlier, but Eleanor Lawson Had Left Something Behind<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first officer through the bedroom door was a broad-shouldered woman with rain shining on the sleeves of her uniform.
