the account appearing legitimate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Enough to create records.<\/p>\n<p>Not enough to help me substantially.<\/p>\n<p>Then Brooks pointed to a recurring payment.<\/p>\n<p>Monthly.<\/p>\n<p>Same amount.<\/p>\n<p>Different destination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She slid over the account identification.<\/p>\n<p>The payments went to a private mailbox company.<\/p>\n<p>The same mailbox center connected to Connor.<\/p>\n<p>The address where Sarah&#39;s checks had been redirected.<\/p>\n<p>Except the box number was different.<\/p>\n<p>Not Connor&#39;s.<\/p>\n<p>Registered user:<\/p>\n<p>Richard Hale.<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooks nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorthbridge was sending money to Richard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was that phrase again.<\/p>\n<p>But this time something felt different.<\/p>\n<p>Richard had known about Mom&#39;s continuing fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Richard returned after disappearing.<\/p>\n<p>Richard emailed Connor.<\/p>\n<p>Richard&#39;s mailbox received money from Northbridge while Mom ran it.<\/p>\n<p>Had he been blackmailing her?<\/p>\n<p>Helping her?<\/p>\n<p>Monitoring her?<\/p>\n<p>The heroic version of Richard was beginning to crack.<\/p>\n<p>Then Brooks showed me the final record.<\/p>\n<p>The mailbox account had been paid by Northbridge for three years.<\/p>\n<p>After Northbridge dissolved, payments stopped.<\/p>\n<p>But the mailbox remained active.<\/p>\n<p>Someone renewed it personally.<\/p>\n<p>Last month.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Hale was not merely alive.<\/p>\n<p>He was close enough to maintain a mailbox three blocks from my university.<\/p>\n<p>The same place that had intercepted my aunt&#39;s checks.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Brooks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know where he is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>I understood anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Richard had spent years appearing to protect victims from my parents.<\/p>\n<p>But the trail now led directly through the machinery used to steal from me.<\/p>\n<p>Grandma trusted him enough to help hide evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Dad hated him enough to erase him.<\/p>\n<p>Mom sent his mailbox money.<\/p>\n<p>And Richard had stayed close enough to watch all of us.<\/p>\n<p>For
