wanted.<\/p>\n<p>Separate legitimate companies.<\/p>\n<p>Identify victims.<\/p>\n<p>Freeze illicit control.<\/p>\n<p>Preserve jobs where possible.<\/p>\n<p>Return assets through tribunal process.<\/p>\n<p>It would take years.<\/p>\n<p>But for the first time, no private operator was running ahead of it.<\/p>\n<p>Then Richard\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>He answered.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He listened.<\/p>\n<p>Then looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s Michael.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>Michael was under temporary custody.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy is he calling?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard put it on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Michael said, \u201cYou opened Robert\u2019s succession file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you know about the foreign facilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do not know the last one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Voss immediately searched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael gave a code.<\/p>\n<p>C-17.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing in Sterling.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing in Bellweather.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing in Victor\u2019s index.<\/p>\n<p>Michael said, \u201cBecause it is not a company facility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA personal insurance structure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEdward Bennett\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Dad insure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot what.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou and Richard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my brother.<\/p>\n<p>Michael continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father created a contingency fund in case the network ever targeted either of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cC-17 holds approximately thirty-two million dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>Another hidden family fund.<\/p>\n<p>Richard swore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael said, \u201cNeither did Margaret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That mattered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho controls it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEdward never named a successor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUpon his death, authority passed to the designated protector.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael said one name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus Hale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went completely still.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>He looked genuinely stunned.<\/p>\n<p>My father had given Marcus control over a thirty-two-million-dollar protection fund before Marcus ever became my boss.<\/p>\n<p>Which meant their
