REQUIRED.

Mom’s key.

Not here.

I closed my eyes.

Voss had it.

Twenty minutes away.

Daniel said, “Remote quorum.”

Marcus searched.

“There.”

Victor’s relay units.

Four locations.

One listed:

STERLING HQ — ROBERT PRIVATE SAFE.

Daniel stared.

“What private safe?”

Richard laughed.

“Your father loved hidden compartments.”

“Apparently.”

We returned to the archive.

Voss was bringing Mom’s key toward another relay location under outside-counsel escort.

Elena had Robert’s key.

Jessica with her.

If Daniel possessed a relay, we could authorize remotely.

We searched Robert’s private office.

No safe.

Then I remembered his metal key case.

The hidden memory-card compartment.

Maybe the relay was equally small.

Daniel opened a locked drawer in Robert’s old desk.

Inside sat a rectangular black device.

Sterling logo.

Two antenna ports.

No power cable.

Marcus whispered, “Relay.”

We connected it to an isolated line.

Voss connected Margaret’s key from a law office downtown.

Elena connected Robert’s from a second site.

Jessica confirmed successor authority.

Three green lights appeared.

Then the relay displayed:

PRIMARY BENEFICIARY LOCAL CONFIRMATION.

I placed my hand on the biometric reader.

Green.

SUSPEND LIQUIDATION?

YES.

I pressed it.

For one second, nothing happened.

Then the countdown froze.

4:01:37.

Marcus exhaled.

Richard laughed once.

Daniel sat down.

I did not.

The screen changed.

SUSPENSION ACTIVE: 72 HOURS.

Not solved.

Time purchased.

Again.

Then another line appeared.

WARNING: PRIMARY BENEFICIARY VETO MAY BE OVERRIDDEN BY MASTER CUSTODIAN WITH VICTIM CLASS MAJORITY.

I stared.

“What does that mean?”

Marcus looked sick.

“Paul built restitution classes into the network.”

“So?”

“If he can prove majority victim authorization—”

“He overrides me.”

“How?”

“Signatures.”

“From victims?”

“Yes.”

Richard said, “He’s been paying them for years.”

I understood.

Anonymous restitution.

Pension losses.

Suppliers.

Terminated workers.

Paul had not merely returned money.

He had built a constituency.

People who might sign anything if he told them the network was finally being liquidated in their favor.

Daniel said, “How many?”

Marcus searched.

Victim classes:

3,842 individuals and entities.

Majority required:

1,922.

I looked at the clock.

Seventy-two hours.

“Can Paul reach that many?”

Richard said quietly, “If he already prepared them.”

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Not Michael.

Not Paul, as far as I knew.

One message.

YOU USED MARGARET’S VETO.

Then:

SHE KNEW YOU WOULD.

A third:

ASK WHY SHE MADE IT LAST ONLY 72 HOURS.

My blood ran cold.

Whoever sent the message knew we had just activated the veto.

Real time.

I showed Marcus.

He read it.

“Paul?”

“Maybe.”

Richard shook his head.

“He wouldn’t warn her.”

“Michael?”

“No.”

Daniel said, “Marianne.”

I called.

No answer.

Elena.

No answer.

Jessica.

She answered.

“Are you all right?”

“Yes.”

“Is Marianne with you?”

“No.”

“Where is she?”

“She left twenty minutes ago.”

“Why?”

“Said she needed to retrieve something from Bellweather.”

My stomach tightened.

“Alone?”

“Yes.”

I looked at the message again.

Ask why Margaret made it last only 72 hours.

Mom had known the veto would not be enough.

Which meant another step existed.

A step someone now wanted me to find.

And Marianne had just gone back to the fiduciary company that helped build the trust.

Click here to continue reading: PART 26: Marianne Returned to Bellweather
