confused.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had impersonated Marianne.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeeting location?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn\u2019s hotel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat room?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kessler gave the number.<\/p>\n<p>Her room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou entered?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas she there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you find?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA physical token on the desk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn whispered, \u201cYou took it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kessler hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA diagnostic reader.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cloned it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI checked its certificate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reader caches certificates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kessler stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marianne said, \u201cWho gave you the reader?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone turned.<\/p>\n<p>Michael shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI gave him that reader nine years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kessler nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kept it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Someone knew Kessler would use old equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Someone knew Bellweather.<\/p>\n<p>Someone knew Evelyn\u2019s hotel.<\/p>\n<p>Someone impersonated Marianne.<\/p>\n<p>And someone collected the cached certificate afterward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho had access to your equipment after Geneva?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Kessler answered quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy deputy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s corporate investigations office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaul Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one reacted.<\/p>\n<p>Then Marcus did.<\/p>\n<p>He stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSay that again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaul Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus\u2019s face went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know estate.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the supposedly dead trail had never been dead.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Kessler.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Mercer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He checked his phone.<\/p>\n<p>No signal from the corporate device.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel answered when I called.<\/p>\n<p>He searched Sterling access records.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cChloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMercer entire night again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe accessed my father\u2019s private vehicle garage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne car is missing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich direction?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not toward Westbridge.<\/p>\n<p>Toward the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else did he take?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel went
