knew.

I thought back.

Her repeated requests for vendor sheets.

Her fear when I mentioned Horizon.

Her carrying my presentation binder.

Her inability to explain my model.

Maybe she had not been stealing my work.

Maybe she had been looking for something inside it.

I pulled out my phone and called her.

Disconnected.

I tried again.

Same result.

I messaged the analyst from my old team.

Have you seen Jessica?

The answer arrived quickly.

Not since Sterling canceled.

Another message.

Security says she left before everyone else.

My pulse quickened.

I asked:

Did she take anything?

Typing.

Then:

Your old binder.

Of course.

The binder contained my presentation materials.

But also handwritten appendix notes.

Vendor annotations.

And the page where I had first written:

Why 38% above market?

Daniel said, “What?”

“She took my binder.”

Voss looked at the reader.

“If Jessica controls the trust, she may also control the evidence trail.”

Evelyn asked, “Could she dissolve it?”

“Yes.”

“Transfer it?”

“Yes.”

“Publish it?”

Daniel nodded.

“If she has the operational credential.”

I looked at the screen.

A woman I had assumed was a pawn might be holding the switch controlling eleven years of forged transactions in my name.

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

For the first time, the message contained no cryptic instruction.

Only an address.

A motel outside Sacramento.

Below it:

COME ALONE IF YOU WANT RICHARD ALIVE.

Then another message.

BRING THE BENEFICIARY KEY.

I stared.

Daniel read my face.

“What is it?”

I showed him.

Voss swore.

Evelyn gripped the table.

Daniel said immediately, “You are not going.”

I picked up Mom’s brass cylinder.

“Yes, I am.”

“You don’t even know who sent it.”

“No.”

“It could be Coleman.”

“Yes.”

“Marcus.”

“Yes.”

“Jessica.”

“Yes.”

“Richard himself.”

I looked at the address again.

“Yes.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“You cannot walk into an unknown location carrying the only key tied to your beneficiary rights.”

I slipped it into my pocket.

“Watch me.”

His jaw tightened.

“Chloe.”

I looked at him.

“For two days, every person I know has tried to keep me safe by deciding what I am allowed to know, where I am allowed to go, and which risks I am allowed to take.”

I glanced at Voss.

At Evelyn.

Then back to Daniel.

“That part is over.”

I picked up my bag.

The motel address was only ninety minutes away.

Richard might be there.

Jessica might be there.

Or the person who had been using both of them.

But for the first time since Titan collapsed, the next move belonged to me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: The Motel Room Was Empty Except for Richard’s Blood, My Missing Binder,
