Marianne discovered what he was doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe tried to unwind it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cColeman offered her protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom prosecution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor helping create it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo she became part of the network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed quietly.<\/p>\n<p>My family tree was beginning to look like an org chart for financial crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she agree to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo maintain the trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor eleven years?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if she dissolved it, the historical transactions surfaced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if she kept it alive, Coleman could use it against me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Richard know she was maintaining it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe let me believe she was dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were a child when Margaret told you that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother told me that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked toward the altar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Marianne was the first person in your family who agreed to cooperate with Sterling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse jumped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSterling?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert Sterling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of cooperation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe gave him access to the trust records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Daniel\u2019s father knew my identity was being used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears before Daniel says his team discovered it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Daniel know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou expect me to believe that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI stopped expecting you to believe anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fair.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is one more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Richard left Sunday, he said if anything happened, I was supposed to tell you the original bargain failed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat original bargain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she bargain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked tired.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret knew Thomas had used your name. She knew Richard was trying to expose him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe went to Robert Sterling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s father.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she ask for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo keep you out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what did Sterling want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe offered to protect you if Margaret let Sterling quietly take control of the trust structure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo my mother gave Sterling access to an entity in my name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Daniel\u2019s father promised I would never be implicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Robert Sterling died before he could finish unwinding it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was too neat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo who inherited control?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLegally, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My breath slowed.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Daniel had not created the trust.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he did not know every detail.<\/p>\n<p>But his family had held leverage over my identity for years.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly without telling me.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly while using Titan to draw Coleman into the open.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did Richard continue working with Sterling after that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he believed Daniel was different from his father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus gave a tired half-smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believed Richard was different from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not an answer.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the best one I was going to get.<\/p>\n<p>I turned to leave.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus remained beside the pew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not build your entire career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou influenced enough of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need you to understand something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI doubt that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were never promoted because Richard asked me to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked me to stop blocking you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a difference.<\/p>\n<p>Small.<\/p>\n<p>But real.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything after that, you earned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hated that part of me wanted to keep the sentence.<\/p>\n<p>So I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, the afternoon air felt brighter than it should have.<\/p>\n<p>I stood on the church steps and opened Richard\u2019s six-name list again.<\/p>\n<p>Coleman.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>Voss.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Marianne.<\/p>\n<p>Five men whose motives overlapped in ways I barely understood.<\/p>\n<p>And one woman my family had erased from my life before I was old enough to ask why.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom, in Richard\u2019s handwriting, was a line I had missed inside the fold.<\/p>\n<p>ONE OF THEM STILL CONTROLS THE TRUST.<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas was dead.<\/p>\n<p>Coleman wanted it.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus claimed he did not have it.<\/p>\n<p>Voss denied knowing it existed.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s family had once taken control.<\/p>\n<p>Marianne had administered it.<\/p>\n<p>One of them still controlled the trust carrying my name.<\/p>\n<p>And whoever did could manufacture my guilt whenever they chose.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feeleverystory.online\/?p=10083\">Click here to continue reading: PART 11: I Found My Supposedly Dead Aunt in Switzerland, and She Told Me My Mother Chose the Lie That Ruined Richard<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Marcus agreed to meet only after I told him I had found the Chloe Bennett Family Trust.
