Not then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExplain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas told Margaret that if Richard exposed the trust or the vendor network, records would surface showing money moving through accounts in your name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>The $3.2 million.<\/p>\n<p>Nine years ago came later, but there may have been earlier manufactured records too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told her you could be prosecuted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Mom believed him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe had already seen enough to know he could create documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Richard do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo protect me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed softly.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven years of anger.<\/p>\n<p>Built from the same pattern.<\/p>\n<p>Someone threatened me.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone else decided what I should be allowed to know.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you promise Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat if Richard disappeared and she stayed quiet, I would keep the original evidence hidden until there was a way to expose the network without sacrificing you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the documents spread across the isolated workstation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d she said. \u201cI failed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn, who sent me these messages?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho besides Richard knew about your promise?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret.
