Executive legal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho controls executive legal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wrote it down.<\/p>\n<p>Voss stood suddenly and walked to the window.<\/p>\n<p>The black SUV across the road was gone.<\/p>\n<p>He cursed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIsn\u2019t that good?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause they saw enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough for what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo know I\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that means whoever sent them now knows Sterling compliance and Edward Bennett\u2019s lawyer are connected to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression remained calm, but one hand had tightened around her cane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to move the originals,\u201d Voss said.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey know where they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey suspect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not handing them to Sterling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither am I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn studied him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Voss looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou mentioned Samuel Drake?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned sharply toward Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>She had not said his name since Voss entered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know about Drake?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Voss\u2019s answer came immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I introduced Richard to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Sacramento address in my pocket suddenly became more important.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we go there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Voss said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if Richard left anything with Drake, Coleman\u2019s people will eventually make the same connection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Voss looked toward the road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter seeing me here, sooner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>We all looked at it.<\/p>\n<p>Voss said, \u201cAnswer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe, where are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Voss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Evelyn Shaw\u2019s house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel said, \u201cIs Leonard Voss there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every hair on my arms rose.<\/p>\n<p>I had not told him.<\/p>\n<p>Neither had Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>Voss\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice lowered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave the house now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Leonard Voss is not investigating the fraud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Voss stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe helped design the financial structure your father discovered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Voss.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since he arrived, his composure broke.<\/p>\n<p>Not much.<\/p>\n<p>A tightening around the eyes.<\/p>\n<p>A small shift backward.<\/p>\n<p>But enough.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel said, \u201cChloe, whatever Voss told you, do not give him your father\u2019s records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked from the phone to the man standing ten feet away.<\/p>\n<p>Two men.<\/p>\n<p>Two histories.<\/p>\n<p>Two versions of the same sixteen-year-old crime.<\/p>\n<p>And one of them had just accused the other of being there at the beginning.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feeleverystory.online\/?p=10080\">Click here to continue reading: PART 8: Two Men Accused Each Other of Building the Fraud, Until My Father\u2019s Records Revealed a Third Name Neither Wanted Me to See<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Evelyn did not panic.
