A glass sat beside the sink. Mail waited unopened near the door.

Nothing in the room suggested that my career had ended before breakfast.

I poured water.

The phone rang again.

I ignored it.

Then another voicemail appeared.

Jessica.

Her voice was clipped.

“Chloe, I know you’re upset, but we need the password for one of the archived workbooks.”

I nearly laughed.

They had disabled my access before I could finish breakfast.

Now they wanted passwords.

I deleted the voicemail.

At 1:46, a text arrived from an analyst on my former team.

Are you okay?

A second followed immediately.

What is happening here?

Then:

Sterling keeps asking for you.

I stared at that sentence.

Another message arrived.

Marcus told them you had a family emergency.

I put the phone down.

So that was the story.

Not restructuring.

Not termination.

A family emergency.

They had removed me, taken my work, and lied to the client about why I wasn’t there.

For the first time, my anger became useful.

I opened a personal notebook from one of my boxes.

For months I had kept handwritten notes while working on Titan.
